Using Dexron III in overdrive?

My 4+3's OD leaks around the seals a bit and I need to top it off. I've got a couple bottles of Dexron III semi-synth ATF fluid for my other cars, but the 4+3 uses Dexron II. Is it safe/OK to use the III instead? Not sure if the III just replaces the II like SF/SG ratings on engine oil.

Thanks. That seems to be saying that newer formulas are backwards compatible with older, meaning I'm fine using III. I did find an auto store open after I posted; their book says my transmission should be using III... Since I wound up putting in only about a half-quart, it probably doesn't make a huge difference anyway - long as SOMETHING is in there .
