valve covers

Are the valve covers interchangeable? I mean from left side to right side? Looks like it. According to my restoration book, the cover with the oil cap should be on the driver's side, but on my car it's on the passenger's side.

Yes, they are. When I bought my '79 I noticed that the oil cap was on the passenger side of the engine right under the air cleaner duct to the fender? I thought to myself for a moment and didn't think that was correct and thought that there would be alot of unhappy Chevy mechanics if they had to use a long transmission funnel just to put a quart of motor oi in.

Apparently I think in my case when the auto mechanic may have adjusted the valves with the valve covers off (and of course with the air cleaner and duct work off) that he put the valve covers back on the wrong side?

I changed them myself without much trouble.
