Do you need the canister or can it be removed and what has to be done to remove it and all lines?

I have no experience with a '73 but I will give this a shot as I have replaced my vapor canister in my '79 a couple of years ago. Basically the fuel vapor from the fuel tank is circulated through the vapor canister and back to the QJet to be re-burned. Part of the emissions process. I think if you remove the vapor canister and plug or remove the lines from the fuel tank then you will need a "Vented" Fuel Tank Cap. In my case, I removed all of the emissions components except the vapor canister and lines. I'm thinking of leaving the vapor canister in place but removing the fuel vapor return lines to the QJet so this is an interesting post that I will follow. I'd like to keep everything in place if I can even though it may not function so that the next person who owns it can at least have the option to go back to some originality. Do you have a shop manual or AIM to refer to?

You can but why? Car was designed around the canister so after removal you must vent the tank and recieve the fumes the canister was designed to supress. Ever notice at car shows how the older cars smell gassy? There is no performance gain except for the removal of maybe 4lbs of "stuff".

When I was drag racing my Vette, I had the cannister disconnected, and yes, when I left the car in the garage, it could smell in the garage the fumes pretty badly...:mad specially about an hour after turning the warm engine off.

And I am not even as conservationist as your regular tree-hugger out there; however, the environment suffers from every bit of waste we let scape. Good habits and solid planning will save our planet for our kids and grandkids, and great grandkids, and so on...:beer
