Here's a good one....Why is it sometimes that my right rear feels like I'm driving over a rumble strip especially during mild acceleration?

It's not always, it's just as I start accelerating normally between 45-70 mph (no massive gas pedal or crazy stuff)

Could it be a bad shock or the suspension going into a form of resonance?

I don't have a loose wheel, new tires, chrome rims or loose axel nut. ;shrug

Is it correct there is no such problem at a STEADY speed of like 60-70 mph?

Correct, it's not steady or continuous, it's like the occasional rumble strip appears just at the same time I mildly accelerate.

Might want to check the axle shaft for a bad joint that makes noise under load.

That sounds pretty interesting, but wouldn't it be under load all the time?

Yes, but the loads go up under higher torque/acceleration.

Took care of the "clunk" awhile back....And yes I torqued the axle nuts with a torque wrench....I'm a licensed aircraft mech specializing in helicopters and I used go on the test flights (about 3500 hours worth).....Everything is tight!

How about bushings and crap like that, I noticed a bit of rubber torn on my RR sway bar?

I know I'm hunting but crap it's puzzling, I'm not a novice with cars, I built a 68 AMX that would run a 10.04 back in the mid 70's and my 65 GTO's would run in the 11's....The C5 rear and suspension is just different to me

Oh hey by the way...Thanks for the boat rides, they beat swimming (USMC here)

Is it an automatic or a three pedal?

Auto, I'll never drive a standard again

With an auto there is a possibility that it could be your torque converter lock up engaging and disengaging on slight acceleration, watch your tachometer the next time it happens and see if you notice an rpm fluctuation at the same time. Good luck with it. :)

Not sure how you checked your wheel bearings and I am NOT trying to say you don't know how to do it but I know you would like more input than less. Here is a video showing just how hard it can be to check a wheel bearing. And, it is on the same wheel you are questioning.

I appreciate it, but that's been the standard way to check wheel bearings since my grandfather taught me back in the late 50's...the same for tie rod ends...While I was at it I also lubed the axle splines and replaced the rear rotors and brakes (and yes, my parking brake works fine).....Like I said, I'm a professional aircraft mechanic and have been twisting wrenches on cars for about 50 years. I'm just trying to figure this occasional rumble strip thing out.................Oh yeah, you can replace the oil pressure sending unit without taking the intake apart, I did it in about 45 minutes.

Why don't you try swapping the RR shock with the LR. It's free and not to hard to try.

Been working on cars for about the same amount of time. Parents got me a new car in 1966 but I figured if I wanted to learn how to work on them I would need a "test stand" so to speak. Bought a 1948 Willys jeep and began to take everything apart over time to learn how to work on cars. Had a lot of fun with that jeep.

I've been thinking about the swap as a test, thanks

The 1st car I owned and worked on was a 65 GTO which I also occasionally raced. My 2 fun cars were my 69-70 Daytona and the 68 AMX

We really need to have some accelerometers to mount at several locations to monitor what is going on but I doubt that is gong to happen.

Take a look at this link. They talk about issues with the transmission mount. While they are talking more about wheel hop, I think it is worth reading. What gets me is you say you don't get the issue at lower speeds while accelerating.

It isn't hopping, and switching the shocks hasn't helped, I still get an occasional rumble strip effect....I said occasional and normally under mild mid speed acceleration, but sometimes when just going down the road:hb

How many miles on it? Have you ever had the trans flushed?
Might be time to do that and replace the filter if it hasn't
been done recently. My 2000 was starting to do something like that,
and had about 50K on it, so I had it done and it hasn't done it since.
Just one more thing to think about.........
