My 63 has both tags riveted instead of spot welded. When I purchased the car I checked the car as thoroughly as I knew how and everything looks correct. As I work on the car everything checks out as a 63. I traced back through 2 owners covvering 28 years and no major repairs were done to the car. So why are these plates riveted?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance. I love this site.

I am no expert by any means however every other type of car including my 75 and my 87 vette have rivited vin tags .....

I'm also no expert on early Corvettes but my 69 Camaro had riveted VIN and trim tags. Andy

Thanks guys. I was recently told they should be welded. It was the first time I heard this.

Its just me but if they were welded THEN i would be worried ..... Good luck. have fun

The early corvettes vin tag was screwed into the door jam.
During the production of the 1960 corvette, the vin tag was then moved to under the hood, spot welded to the steering column.
Up thru 1962, the vin tag is all there was. No model, color etc. tags used on the C1's.

I just looked at a '63 FI coupe to purchase 10/19/03 for $49,500 and the trim tag was riveted and the vin tag was spot welded. This car's vin # was in the 9000's.

'63 VIN tags were all welded, but many of the welds failed (especially when some of the dealers hand-stamped the delivery date on them and the shock popped the welds loose), and they then drilled and pop-riveted them on. Does your VIN plate show any evidence of spotweld indentatiions?

Has this post been locked? Why?

Maybe because you said your plate had been 'riceted'. Most people here are out the door when it comes to anything 'riced'.

Is it not possible that the rivets are covering up the original weld marks?

Well I meant to say riveted. Bad typing. The rivets are where it would have been welded so the weld would have been drilled out when it was riveted. So if I remove the back wheel the frame vin can be seen. How big will it be? Thank you both for the help.

Here's a typical riveted '63 VIN plate - the spotweld indentations are pretty obvious, and wouldn't be covered by the head of a 1/8" pop-rivet.
