I am new here and have owned a 1981 Corvette for approx. 11 years.
I have been checking a few things out with regards the VIN.
It is:
1G1AY8763BS427579

According to the VIN it was made in St. Louis.
The 9th number of the VIN in other 81 Corvette's is 4,
mine is 3 ??

Does anyone know what this means?
Also, is it worth sending for a Carfax (via the website)?

Thanks Tom73.

Does anyone know if the Carfax website is reputable? Should I apply for the a VIN trace?

I've heard both good things and bad things about CarFax :confused I've never used it myself so I have no first hand knowledge ;)

I believe CarFax will only go back as far as 1981 vehicles.. Also every once in awhile one of members gets CarFax then offers to look up numbers for fellow members ;) (which a very nice thing to do for fellow members)

Also, if you were not aware of the L81VetteRegistry, let me introduce you to The L81 Vette Registry. We also have a forum setup here at CAC, just above the C3 Forum's ;)

Welcome aboard, Enjoy the Ride! :w

I don't believe there are any factory records from the St. Louis assembly plant. All records were destroyed when Corvette production moved to St. Louis.

However, if your car was originally sold in Canada, it's my understanding that GM Canada can provide you comprehensive info on your car based on its VIN.

Perhaps someone around here will chime in about the phone number to call...
