Looking at a possible stolen Vette '69 -'76 ish. in a local neighborhood. My stolen car task force guy is out til next week. No VIN markers showing in the window. Where else can I look for it? Thought you die-hard guys may be able to help this lady cop.

A photo of the vin location you can observe from the outside. As stated all others would require acccss to the car.

Here is another as mentioned above.

Thanks for your help. Our local auto task force guy is out and I can't get hold of anyone else. Thought the guys who own them would know better than anyone. My department is near Ft Hood Texas and we are a 36 sworn officer department. Contrary to popular belief, most smaller agencies don't have access to alot of high-tech stuff and don't have expects standing by.

If that vehicle is a local car just find someone who can help you investigate the vin when they return to work. If you find that vin plate has been altered or removed just impound the car. If you find the vehicle vin has been altered you will need a expert to locate the hidden vin numbers. They can also do a test to bring up any filed off numbers.

Something is strange, maybe afoul here?

I don't care what Police Dept. someone claims they are from, they ALL have access to their State Police Dept. and all state depts. have access to any information they may require, at any time 24/7.
Holidays included.
As a matter of fact, I have a brother-in-law who IS a N.Y. State policeman.
I called him prior to answering this, and he is very interested in speaking to you.
I have sent him a copy of these e-mails.
I hope he can help your quandry and get you what you need.

Harker Hts PD telephone non-emergency telephone number is 254-699-7600. If you think it's questionable, call `em. If not, I'm sure any observations or assistance will be appreciated.

Most of the state folks are probably on vacation or too busy.. plus it's always better if you can make the case without their "help".

CQRT in AZ
(Former PD)

Thank you to who have responded favorably. The number that CQRT gave is the correct number for my agency. My name is Tammy Pearson, badge #1630 and I am the day shift supervisor. I work Sun-Weds, 7a-5p if anyone wanted to check. I just thought that the guys who own and drive these vehicles had more knowledge than someone who doesn't have one. To those of you who think that help is always available 24/7, well it is not. Maybe in New York, but not here. The two DPS/Auto task force guys are out until 1/5/04. I have tried other routes. I am not ashamed to admit that I did not know something and needed to ask, but that is how we all learn. The car is on private property and there is a long story about how we came across it, so towing it without further proof is out of the question. Again, thanks to those who were willing to help.

Tammy,
Could it be a state issued VIN? Those that I have seen issued by Texas are mounted on the door frame by the striker.

tom...

I always do better with pictures. Here is the location on the frame cd5 described. Of course with the drivers side rear wheel removed it would be easier to see, plus expect dirt & rust to make it hard.

Am I missing something here? I am trying to figure out why giving out the location of the VIN numbers is such a national security threat.

Not security, just an unusual way of getting the info. If this is a stolen car, and the persons who have possession hear that the authorities are on their tail, that car will disappear (again) pretty quick.

Best of luck with nabbing the bad guys. :beer

update

Just an update for those who care...

The was was stolen, but not just at this time. It had been stolen in Georgia in the late 80's and had a Georgia state assignment number in the door frame. No other VIN numbers were anywhere on the car. The car was a 1971, had 1972 seat belts, 1973 lights and a 1975 motor. Very interesting case anyway, although we weren't able to catch a bad guy out of it.

Again, thanks to those who helped.

Tammy
