I recently purchased a Beige 81. I am puzzled about the VIN number on the car. I am the 3rd owner and the car looks absolutely stock.

The VIN Number is 1G1AY8767BS409568. The Corvette "Black Book" indicates that the VIN numbers should all be 1G1AY8764xxxxxxxx. Why would my VIN be xxxxx8767xxxxxxxx rather than xxxxx8764xxxxxxxx?

Thanks.

The particular digit you are enquiring about is the check digit.....mine is a '1' ie 8761BS.....and by the way, your production date is not long before mine....about 250 units lower.......St Louis built........hope this helps.....dbj:D

Thank you.

I was hoping my car was something strange and exotic. Maybe even that it was custom built for Elvis.

I'll enjoy it anyway.

Each one is unique in its own right......they all have their own history too, granted some more exotic that others, but the main thing is to enjoy.....I love mine, drive it every day between May and October (snow the rest of the year).....regards and cheers...dbj:beer

Doug,

Elvis died August 16, 1977 ;) I think he probably had a Corvette or two around somewhere, but as I remember he was more into the Caddy ;)

(I remember coming back to the Motel from working at a generation plant all day and hearing of Elvis's death, plus my birthday is August 14, many, many years ago ;) )

Wow - I didn't thing we were using calendars back then. I expected to read it more as "A fortnight past the summer solstice" or something a bit more obscure like that...

:D

EDIT: And as a general reminder, in these days of identity theft, protecting personal data is a bit more important. You might not want to post the entire VIN. The last six digits are inconsequential, but can make all the difference for someone looking to gather personal information about you. All the really "meaty" information about your car is in the first 11 digits anyway. The last six make it easy to find the owner, location, etc.
