How do you read that thing in order to undestand the date of manufacture?

I'm pretty sure the VIN won't tell you manufacture date. I think your going to have to locate the build sheet that is hidden on the care somewhere. That should tell you times and dates, I think.

The VIN will tell you the manufacturer, as if you didn't already know that, and such things as various equipment options. If you're interested in the build date, there should be a tag on the trailing edge of the driver's door which will give you the month and year of manufacture.
