Mark,

A little while back you posted a picture of all the wiring you were in the process of installing under the hood of your Corvette, and to say I was impressed, would be an understatement. So impressed for that matter with your work, that it motivated me to undertake the same level of installation.

However in my case, with all the modifications and ad on's, the use of a regular Corvette harness would be a waste of time and money, so I decided to build all my own harnesses, starting from scratch. The following picture show the quantity of wiring and switches that I will need to cram under the dash in order to get everything up and running.

P.S. Who can spot the third brake light, and tell me where it is to be installed ? ( 67heaven, you are not eligible to participate in this little quiz question. )

Your brave man and I wish you the best of luck.

When I did mine I drew it and outlined it on a peice of paper.

I divided my car up into sections. Front grill area, engine bay, dash area, dash cluster, door area, trunk area, rear lighting.

From there I wrote on a peice of paper what was in the front grill area.

Head lamps high and low left and right.marker lights blinkers left and right.horns, electric fans.electric fan relay, electric fan trigger. I would do this for all of the areas to the car.Once i had it all on paper I started to run the wires to these areas neatly by just using the small black wire ties .Once i had them all run and i was sure i had the correct wires where i needed them I then wrapped them in electrical tape.

What ever wire I was running I made sure it was the same color all the way to the end.

I also did every joint I made pefect there were no questionable joints,if they were questionable I fixed them then.I know I ran out of scrink tube several times and had to order it in as no one seams to stock it local

Oh lord. The next thing you guys will do is buy 99.99% pure copper on the commodity market and extrude your own wire. Oh, the humanity :W

Well thanks for that very nice compliment....Coming from you makes it most impressive. I think what you are attempting to do is excellent idea. Doing the wiring yourself can be very gradifying because you know it's done correctly. Of course...that is if you use all the saftey precautions and wire it according to load and wire gauge size.

Sounds like Larry did a fantastic job also. He has the correct idea. You should take your time and draw up your own color coded diagram to refer back to as a month from now you'll forget where things route to.

The wiring is just as important as the body or the frame or the drive line. So grab you a hunk of Bear Meat and sit back and let your mind wonder. One thing I would suggest is when planing wire runs ...if at all possible ...add extra wires in the harness and fold them over against the bundle at the ends. Maybe 2 -4 or even 6 extra lines are nice to have in a main run in several of the harness's.

The Reason......??? When your laying in bed at night waiting for your stomach to finish digesting that hunk of Bear Meat.... All of a sudeden you get this flash idea that you need to add something or have forgotten about. That's when those extra wires will come in handy. Also maybe 6 months from now...if you decide to add something else they'll be their. And the number one reason ....If you ever smoke any wires...You'll have spares.

Keep us posted on the harness build up. Get you a bid piece of plywood...hang it on the wall...draw up the real time size of your car on the plywood...insert nails at the turns and junctions..and lay all your wires up.
When done ..tape em up and your ready to go. Just like they do it at the BG Corvette Plant...
:beer

Also..I'm sure JohnZ and Larry as well as Others have some great ideas. I think "Magic8" did a lot of wiring on his car also. Maybe they'll chime in here and add to my post..

I like wiring. When I wired my street rod [my 1st and only complete] I learned a few things. Looking at a complete harness is a little daunting. Look at each system independently. It makes it easier to understand. Guage harness, lighting, charging etc. One other thing is, I realised when I was done that I did not leave some connections that I could have. It seems silly now eg: My heater motor, steering column etc did not have plugs to them. To remove I had to cut wires. I wired the entire car in a weekend. 4 way flashers, everything. I took my time. Soldered and shrink tubed everything and still had time to go to a car show on Sunday. Don't use crimp connectors, solder and shrink tube. I have a heat gun that works super for shrink tube. Industrial heat guns have a nifty curved attachment for shrink tube. Beats fumbling for a lighter and does a bit nicer job.
