The hatch struts sold by NAPA, Autozone, and many other auto retailers are all made by the same company Arvin-Meritor. I tracked them down via web search of manufacturer data sheets which are required due to the high pressure gas used in them. Then I confirmed it with a call to the plant. Just order a set from AutoZone for about $30.xx or NAPA for $35.xx each.
If you want to go cheap, I have a set on my 88 that I'm replacing next week which I'll sell you. They quite work well except for sticking a bit when the hatch is first released. They don't always stick. When they do, I lift a tiny bit past the sticking point and up goes the hatch with no problem. Email me if you are interested.
