Was recall performed on my C5?

Wife bought a silver 2000 C5 coupe six weeks or so ago. It is our first Vette and fortunately I found this site. I have been viewing it for a couple of weeks now and have learned a bunch.
My question is this--Since I bought the Vette used, how can I determine if recalls were performed on it? Of particular interest is the steering column lock problem that I read about. Is there a website that you can enter the VIN and determine this?
By the way, our Vette is loaded. Checking the options on the glovebox sticker it came with just about everything. It had 38K on it and shows no signs of damage. So far, we love it.

Any local dealer should be able to tell you. Then can enter the VIN and get recall service information on your car. There used to be recall campaign decals affixed on cars or parts affected by a recall but I don't know if GM still does this.

Hello and Welcome to the :CAC

You'll find all kinds of info and helpful suggestions on our little forum here. Lots of nice folks just busting to talk about Corvettes.

Noticed someone posted the web address to register your car with GM... you can also call GM Customer Service at 1-800-222-1020 if you want to talk to a real live person.

Enjoy! And as they say - keep the shiny side up!

:duh Oh man - I almost forgot!!! You know about the WAVE right?!? When you pass another Corvette it is customary to wave hello. Don't be upset if they don't wave back because not everyone does. There are lots of discussions here about these ill mannered types and appropriate punishment for them. :Buttslap :r :bash :SLAP

well, if GMLINK is supposed to tell you all about your car something is fishy in Rome! There is absolutely nothing about my vehicle except my VIN listed! I bought the car NEW from the dealer I take it to regularily for service and nothing about SERVICE HISTORY is listed nor the TWO recalls which were performed by the same said dealer. GMLINK makes me feel so warm and fuzzy!

Thanks for the info. I checked out the GM site and that was exactly what I was looking for. Haven't registered yet ( too lazy to find the VIN ).

C5Vetter,
The My GMLink site doesn't contain information about past recalls- if they have been previously serviced. They will advise you if a new recall is issued.

As for the lack of service history, remember that they don't have access to your dealership's computer to access what work has been done in the past. What they do is establish a predicted timetable- based on your current mileage- of what work should be performed at your next upcoming service interval according to the owner's manual.

It's then up to you to update the account with records based on the service you have either had done in the past, or which you get done after your next visit.

For me, the primary benefit of My GMLink is that I can get an email notification of a recall before the mailings go out, and get a jump on having it serviced. I got my Column Lock Recall taken care of a good week before the notice reached me in the mail. And there are some other cool features about the site: links to parts, the ability to schedule maintenance with your preferred dealer online, downloadable wallpaper and screen savers, etc.

it this day of AUTOMATION, would think the dealers would be connected and ALL service records would be accessible - I should not have to do that, in other words input data - shouldn't I be able to get an acknowledgement from GM Corporate that the RECALL was done - since, they do pay the dealer for the service, NO!?

the way the entire thing is setup is really of NO benefit that I can see, if it works the way as you describe it - just another way to gather data on me

C5Vetter,
The My GMLink system, as it was explained to me, is a stand alone service GM provides as an organization tool for its customers. I cannot explain why GM cannot provide them with access to a vehicle's service history prior to when someone purchased it (if it was purchased used), but I believe if you use the service to schedule appointments with your dealer, that information can be shared with your My GMLink account.

As for it being a tool for GM to gather information about you, yes, I suppose it could be used that way. Ultimately, the information they gather is about what service history your vehicle has, not personal data about you.

If what you want to do is determine if there are any open recalls on your vehicle which have not been addressed by a previous owner, the My GMLink should let you know if there are any open recalls on your car. Your other option would be to visit a dealer and have them access that information via your VIN.

I agree...or a Vette owner could just call their service department and a service writer will gladly will look your Vette up by vin number and give them any info they want...but some Vette owners are just plain lazy and want everyone on earth to kiss their azz:L :L :beer

but, looking at GMLINK, I (current owner since new) MUST enter info - what good is this to me? woopie **** about knowing about a recall - hell, the Forums know about recalls before the dealers and the dealers should know from GM before we in the Forum - so once again, what good/service does GMLINK provide me? Not a damned thing from what I see. My $.02 centavos just like anyone else
