Runs Like A Scalded Cat LT4 CE
Since I've read a few posts about bad waterpumps and I feel we're running a touch hot, I'm going to be replacing the water pump soon on '96 LT4 with 80k miles. Any suggestions with the aftermarket ones? I read allot of claims from Stewart Components and Weiand? What do you guys/gals think?

LT4's run hot naturally... check it out first, because replacing it could actually be worse for the opti-spark if the pump is not bad. Check under the waterpump. there is a small hole. if it is wet, bad pump. if it isn't the pump should be good to go.

If the pump is good, i would highly suggest a cooler T-stat. I have a 160 degree in my LT4

Would that spot be wet at all times or only after a drive? And if you recommend a 160, what is the factory T-stat set at?

sorry it took so long to reply. The factory T-stat, if I remember correctly, is 180 degrees on LT4's. If not it is set at 195 degrees. If the pump is bad there should be some wetness around the hole, assuming you have driven the car within a day or so. Check a couple of times if it makes you feel better. All you really have to do is reach in there and feel around.

I just had my water pump replaced at the dealer (warranty) and it was to come with a 180 thermostat but it ran at 207 so I had them put the old thermostat from the old pump back in it was an after market one and runs at 181. The car works well at the 180 temp. So if you get a new thermostat check it before installing you could save yourself some work.
