Water Pump Replacement for '89 coupe

My water pump has lived it's final days. I need to replace it with new. I am looking for any tips that someone can give me. I have the '89 Chevrolet Manual and read through the instructions.

I have the pump, upper and lower radiator hose and serpentine belt on order from Superior Chevrolet.

I would advise checking out the radiator as well. I just replaced the pump in my '84 and the radiator must have been marginal anyhow and couldn't handle the preasure from the "new and improved" pump and promptly "bit the big one".
 
I replaced my water pump this year, first time I ever did it, it took me several hours. Everything has to come off the front of the engine. Just take your time and go slowly. Here are some bugaboos I remember: have some spare hose clamps ready for the coolant connections to the throttle body, one of mine broke and I had to shlep down to home despot for a new one. This is a good time to remove the frisbee if you haven't done it already, you'll need some washers to use as spacers. I removed mine with no ill effects. When replacing the clamp on the lower radiator hose, make sure the screw is oriented at an angle that you'll be able to get to it later on, because once you put all that stuff back there's only maybe one way to get to it. You'll need a deep socket to remove one of the a/c compressor bolts, I forget what size it is. And once you're all done, here's how I "burp" the system, when refilling the coolant, and it works for me, though maybe it's not exactly right: just put in as much coolant into the radiator as you can, fill it to the top, leave the radiator cap off, start the car, and stand there with your coolant filling the radiator as the level goes down. After a few minutes it will top off. Oh, and you might want to get a new radiator cap, it couldn't hurt and is cheap insurance.
 
Definately replace the Y hose you see in the center of the A/C bracket you see in the pic below. You don't want to have to tear everything back apart to do this one later! Also, when you remove the A/C pump from the bracket, there is one bolt (the one closest to the compressor) that is flatspotted on one edge and you need to have it turned toward the pulley to get it out. Even then it's a BIOTCH. Good luck and bring your patiance ;)

One other thing to think about while you have it all torn apart is the timing chain. Its a whole lot easier to do now than have to tear it all apart again.

Thanks for all of the tips guys. It is exactly what I was looking for.

Started taking her apart last night. Got as far as the A.I.R. Pump and had to call it quits for the night. I plan on taking my time and will replace anything that even looks partially worn.

I think I will take a look at the timing chain. Your right, it would be the best time to take care of it based on everything that has to come off.

It seems like you want to disconnect the AC hoses since it is hard to get the bracket off of the water pump. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe loosen up the accuulator?

Also, I am amazed how much fuel comes out of the fuel lines. I reconnected them just to stop the fuel flow. How much can I expect? I soaked a towel that is about 14"x20" in size.

Loosen the gas cap to let the pressure out of the fuel system and not nearly as much gas will run out.

I had removed the gas cap before loosening the fuel line. So far, it has soaked up about (3) towels with gas. I just gave up, removed the AC compressor bracket and tightened the lines back up again. I think it has something to do with siphoning the gas since the tank is full.

The project has been dragging lately. I will have it complete this Saturday. Thanks for all of the tips.

when i change my fuel filter i had the car running and pull the FP fuse till she died out of gas, removed the gas cap and still took a little bath. and how do you get the smell of gas off any way?? ahh
