water pump shaft

How do you tell which shaft you have(short long) ?

The difference isn't shaft length, it's the length of the legs on the casting. SB Corvettes used the "short" water pump (almost no clearance between the back of the water pump and the timing cover), and the dimension from the block mounting face on the legs to the front of the pulley hub is 5-3/4".

it is not the shafts that are long or short it is the water pump housing. the back of the short pumps fit very close to the timing gear cover.

Thanks for clearing that up, I'm getting a wiff of antifreeze when I turn . don't really see the source I'm suspecting the pump

thanks for the link Jon,well worth hanging on to !!!!!

Aren't the shaft diameters different as well?

'55-'70 small-block pumps had a 5/8" shaft and hub pilot; changed to 3/4" in 1971. Hub bolt circle was 1-3/4" from '55-'70, changed to 2-1/8" in 1971. '65-'70 big-block pumps had a 3/4" shaft and 5/8" hub pilot with a 3" bolt circle; pilot changed to 3/4" and bolt circle changed to 3-1/4" in 1971.

The impeller shaft diameter inside the pump stayed at 5/8" from '55-'82.
