Pump pictured above is NOT a long pump. It may be either a vette pump or a plain manilla short pump ... they're nearly same ... but they're not same. If the motor & pumps & pulleys are original for a 71 & up vette ... and ALL belts & pulleys line up straight ... then it's a near certainty it's a vette pump. Again, while a vette pump is NOT a long pump ... a 71 & up vette pump is slightly different than a short pump. Many folks mistakely think a 71 & up vette pump and a short pump are same ... they're usually not ... and aftermarket pulleys for a short pump will have slight misalignment on a 71 & up vette pump ... shims etc can correct for this. Vette and all short pumps for 70 & back are about 5.625" from block flange to front of pump hub ... 71 & up VETTE are about 5.795" ... a little more than 1/8" difference. BTW, a LONG pump is about another 1.125" longer than a vette pump ... long pumps have an obvious gap between back of pump & front of timing cover ... big enough to put your finger in. In essence, if you put aftermarket "short" pulleys on an OEM 78 small block C3... you'll need to shim those pulleys ... or live with belt misalignment.

I`ts correct. You appear to have a short waterpump for early Chevy applications with a pipe plug for a bypass in the center, top. However the engine appears to be one of a later model with center holddown bolts in the valve cover. Pullys for one will not be correct for the other. It really depends on what year car the engine is installed. Early Vettes use the short pump {68 and earlier} later models use the long pump. But again some engine swaps can change the whole picture by miss matching accessories.

I respectfully disagree ... NO vette came with a "long" pump ... the later C3 came with a longer pump ... it's made like a short pump but it's a "vette" (also used on some trucks) pump with hub spaced ~3/16" forward of typical short pump. Vettes w/ centerbolt vc motors began with C4 ... they also came with a short-type pump but were aluminum. Most other vehicles' centerbolt vc motors came with a long-type iron pump. So true that vette engine swaps often have pulley alignment problems ... this dues to differences in either/both pulleys and pumps.

Again ... 3 basic sbc pump-length configurations:
~5.625": short-type for ~69-back vette and many other older chevy.
~5.795": short-type "vette pump" for ~70-up C3 & some trucks.
~6.920": long-type for non-vette.

short pump housings & legs are same.
long pumps have longer "legs" than short pumps.

If you run a true non-vette plain short-type pump on a later C3 w/later C3 pulleys & accessories ... that later C3 water pump pulley will end up ~3/16" too far rearward ... you'll need a ~3/16" shim spacer between water pump hub & water pump pulley. Moroso & others sell an inexpensive shim kit made just for this. Or, get the correct vette specific "short" pump.

First I want to thank you both for the input. This motor was put in the car in 1992 and is a zzz crate chevy 350/345..so I'm told when I bought it. The power steering pump is not an exact lineup with the water pump pulley but not enough to be a nuisance. Right b4 I purchased this car 2 yrs ago the water pump was replaced by the previous owners mechanic and even tho it doesnt leak it is not a perfect fit so I might yank it out. He also put in a 2 belt pulley alternator when it needed only a 1 belt so that has to go also.:D What I want to do is buy a chrome alt, brackets and whatever other goodies are easy to install....I cannot fit my finger between the water pump and the timing cover so I guess its the short pump...Look out Eckler's heres comes my credit card;)
