Hi all,
i just got a call from the mechanic who has my car for inspection and he said that "while he was in there, he saw the waterpump leaking, minor". He offered to replace it, but i asked him not to, i think, he might throw something generic in there (and charge me a nice little sum). Soooooo.. I'll have to take a look at the car myself, but is there a good way to check on the waterpump ? I remember, i had it undone a little (and buttoned it back, i thought) to check for the stamppad number at some time, maybe that is what he is referring to ? Anything i need to look out for ? Obviously i am no tech (y'all know me. :gap), so take it slow and easy on me..

TIA !

If it's leaking coolant out of the front of the nose (where the shaft comes out) or out of the weep hole in the bottom of the nose, the bearing seals are gone and it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. If it's just leaking where it bolts up to the block, removal, cleaning the mating surfaces, and new gaskets (use thread sealer on the bolts - they go into the water jackets) will probably take care of it.

I agree with above. If it does need to be replaced, you can pick up a high flow pump at autozone reasonably. They're easy enough to replace yourself with basic skills. Paint it to match your engine first (I hate rusty water pumps!) God bless, Sensei

Thanks Guys..

I talked to the mechanic last night when i picked her up and he said she is bleeding out of the weep hole, between the 2 bearings. He said that while not immediatly an issue, it will kill the pump eventually and it should be replaced. I was thinking about replacing my radiator anyway, might as well throw that in, right ? Reason for the rad is that, right now, i have a cheapo generic one in there, that is held in with cable ties (my brother in law trying to save me money). I found all the parts on the zip-products website (#RA-123 for the rad at $249, #M-3055 for the draincock at $4.50 and #WP-101 for the water pump at $85..). I'll go order that stuff now and see when i have a little free time to replace that.

Sensei: Good idea to paint the pump before, didnt think of that. I have to see what it looks like now to match it.
As to the Autozone: They are much cheaper, you're right, but i would be lost if they ask any questions or even trying to pick the correct one for my car... Thanks for the tip though.
