Would Permatex Dielecric Tune-up Grease work the same as what is prescribed in the owner's manual for lubricating weatherstrip? The packaging doesn't say anything about being silicone grease.

YES

Hi there,
NO. Dielectric grease is a different formulation, and is NOT recommended by GM for its weatherstrips.

Thanks for the heads up...on what to use on weatherstripping.

How often? once a year? Twice a year?

:D Armor-all seems to work quite well.

;) I use it to keep the appearance up... and its use seems to also keep the weatherstrip soft & plyable!!!

Krytox

Leslie's Pool and Spa Lubricant, $5 for a tube. The best.

Or you can buy it from a vette catalog for $20.

You can order 3 tubes of the GM stuff from MidAmerica for 9.99. It's listed in the weatherstrip section.

303 Aerospace Protectant. Generally agreed to be one of the best vinyl and rubber protectants. It makes the rubber look like new without the unnatural shine you get from some of the vinyl/rubber treatments.

Use it when you do the vinyl in your car. At least twice a year.

It also protects paint so you can use it to detail your door jambs at the same time.

What about GM part number 3634770 Weatherstrip Lubricant or GM part number 12345579 Dielectric Grease, which GM says "May be used as weatherstriping lubricant"

HI there,
3634770 is what we use a the dealership.
As far as the rest, the service VME issued that the dieelectric is a last resort.

c4c5,

I checked with my dealer parts department and was told the part number you posted comes in a 50 gram container and was very expensive ($39.00 list price). Is this correct? What is the product? Thanks.

The dealer I checked with told me $50 per item and did not know what size the container was. He did not have it in stock.

HI there,
Yes, this is correct, and it is very expensive. However, 1 tube will do at least 5 convertibles, including doors, and rear deck weather strips as well.
And it only has to be done once a year, following the instructions on the tube.
So, that would last you 5 years, at least.

List price for GM Part 3634770 Weatherstrip Lubricant is $51.14, if you can find it. Go to http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ and you can order it for $29.15, plus shipping and applicable taxes — $37.10 to Ohio. Not cheap, but certainly better than list!
