So today I went to the junkyard and found a motor I had never seen before. There were 2 of them side by side. It was a large sized 350 or bigger GM motor. But, it had an alluminum block and heads, weird looking water pump mounting holes, black stock valve covers, the heads were weird looking, and the head bolts went through the head and along the side of the block (visible) and bolted into the bottom of the block. When I first saw it, I said "that Aint no GM motor" but it's got GM stamped all over it.
What is this out of???????

Sounds like a late model suburban/pick up 454

Doubt if it's any GM engine - GM never made one with any portion of the head bolts exposed; got any photos?

They MIGHT have been Cadillac HT (High Tech) 4.9 Liter engines. Produced from '82 to '94 (I think) in 4.1, 4.5, and 4.9 Liter versions. The blocks were aluminum and the heads were cast iron. GM had a lot of problems with these engines with gasket leaks (due to the different rates of expansion) and had numerous recalls to fix. At least one of the fixes involved putting a solution like Bar's Leaks in the coolant system. Anyway, I know the 4.9 liter version ran the head bolts down the side of the block and they were threaded into the bosses on the lower end (just above the crankshaft), maybe some of the 4.1 and 4.5's did too.

I was asking about this today too, and my mechanic couldn't think of anything in the 454 block design that sounded like you describe, Dan. He said that Cadillac had bolts that went through the block to the main bearing saddles, but no Chevy block. ;shrug

Yeah I will def get a picture of this and try to get it on here, I say "try" because i can never get pics to load up on this site. haha
yeah maybe it is a cadillac, they way you describe it sounds just like how it looks. It looked huge though, I mean it DEF looks bigger than 350. But maybe it looks big just because it's sitt'n on the ground. I will go get a pic for yins.

Oh and does GM and cadillac have any connection to each other? Cause it had GM marked all over it, on the block, the intake manifold, and exhaust manifolds.

Cadillac is a division of General Motors, so a Caddy engine would have GM all over it.

I went down yesterday to get a pic of this motor, but they wouldn't let me in, They were having some problems with theft yesterday. So I will try again in a week or so. I need to go down and find some motor mounts for a Probe, so maybe i'll be able to snag a pic.

What in God's name for?!

Just kidding. I used to own one. Still see it around town, and the new owner seems happy with it. It was down to "fill up the oil and check the gas" by the time I sold it, so I can only imagine what she's doing to keep it running...

Every Chevrolet motor I have ever seen has the lower row of head bolts exposed, right above the exhaust manifolds.

Every Chevrolet V-8 or V-6 motor I have ever seen has the lower row of head bolts exposed, right above the exhaust manifolds.

I interpret that to mean the bolts are visible throughout their length. I've never seen those blocks. ;shrug

Haha yeah the Probe isn't mine. It's a cousin of mines. It's a '89 It's on it's second trani, second motor and third paint job. hahaha over 200,000 miles. I am puting in a new clutch kit for him, so we decided since it's apart we should change the mounts. There were nothing let of the mounts, the bolt was just sitting in them, all the rubber was gone. Rather amazing it didn't bounce around in there.

Yeah thats what i mean, they are visible throughout the length of the bolt.
