What bulb do you have in your Aero nose??

You may recall my ordeal to change out the burnt foglight bulb in the ruby car last month at (State) inspection time - http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77978

Well, I was wondering, after not being able to find the #890 bulb at the parts store, what do you have installed in your Aero nose??

I could find the 880 GE 27 watt bulbs and also know about the 889 Sylvania 38 watt bulbs - but with those, I would be afraid of the lens material melting - Anyone try a brighter bulb????

I just checked Sylvania's website, and they don't offer an 890 bulb. For a 1989 Corvette they say an 880 bulb should be used. I imagine Callaway probably used the same wiring and such from the originals, so if the stock car can handle an 880, I'd think the aerobody could too.

While I couldn't find info on the 890 on Sylvania, just doing a web search it seems that both the 880 and 890 bulbs are 27 watts. I also found some sites saying that the 880 bulb replaces the 884, 885, 890, 892, and 899 bulbs.

I suspect though that you could call or email Sylvania and they could tell you for sure what bulb you should use.

Well, that's only 11 watts, but as a percentage, it's about 40% more. More current will have more heat. I'd wonder what you want to gain with the 889 bulb, and how hard it would be to replace the housing if you damage it? Factor those and decide if it's worth trying it.

Housing if it melts, is BIG $$$ to replace :crazy

I think I will stick w/ the stock bulbs in this case - Thanks for your input

I just replaced mine with 880's. It was tough to get the bulb out and back in. What I thought would have only taken 10minutes turned into a quick hour!!

I used a flat file on the 880 bulb to reduce the size of the keyways that are used to line the bulb up with the bulb holder in the areo nose. I found that once I did this it only took 10min. to get the bulb back in

Thanks for the tip - did you file all three "prongs" of the bulb?? Makes sense, as it was a TIGHT fit!

...a 2 minute job, taking 2 hrs. :crazy

Thats correct. There are 3 keys on the bulb used to align the bulb with the nose cone then twist into position, this you know.

It was the 3 keys that I filed down to help with the tight fit. Once I did that, the bulb went right in.
