What does SYS mean flashing on the display

Just bought this 93 and noticed today the coolant temp would go out and the letters SYS would flash then go out and the coolant temp would return. Does this mean something? Just installed a new battery last week. No change to the radio still stock Boise system. Just drove back from Delaware about 60 miles so the battery is charged Gauge showing 14.4 volts

I did notice the oil temp analog gauge is reading very low, the digital read out shows 190 and the analog is not at the 100 mark. Could this be a reason?

When ever you see 'SYS' flash, it means that a diagnostic trouble code has been detected. You will need to buy or borrow a code reader (or use a paper clip) to understand what the ECM has in storage: http://corvettebuyers.com/c4vettes/codes.htm
With my luck lately, I'll probably short something out. If the weather holds, I'll just take it to the shop. Thanks for the help

goto any autozone and they can pull the codes for you. or you can buy your own code puller for about 20 bucks that plugs into the ALDL port which is a basic paperclip but in a neat plastic piece so you can't screw up.

oh and by the way thats how you pull the codes.. by shorting it out (grounding) :D

Put in a new battery and look down at the stereo. If it's aftermarket that is the problem. If it's stock radio the battery is out of spec for the ccm. SYS is short for electrical SYStem and is usually one of those two reasons.

If I recall there are no codes to read from a SYS message, That's all ya get but might be wrong. I was once.

SYS Light

If your new battery is good (slim chance but sometimes even new ones are bad) and has the correct liquid level, check all the connections. Both at the battery at at the 'other' end - grounds too. A loose connection may cause the SYS light to flash.
I had an old battery once that would cause the SYS light to blink under hard accel. Everything else worked fine (correct voltages, etc.) but a new battery fixed the problem (no more blinking SYS).

Maybe this will help....I have a 93 and the analog oil temp gauge never did jive with the digital. It's always at 100 like yours when the cars hot. I had the sensor changed when I first got the car but no difference....I wonder if they ever replaced it??? "or" maybe it's a thing with 93's.
The only time I got a "sys" light in the dash where the increments are for oil temp, cooling temp etc. is when my battery went dead, recharged it and the "sys" light was on. After running the car for a few miles and restarting, it went off and stayed off. This has happened to me twice letting the battery go down from not using the car for long periods. Hope it gives you some ideas.

I can't say this will HELP with your problem... but I have a very similar behavior with my 92 that is making me crazy!

First, have you noticed that the "security" light on the lower left of the dash flashes in sync with the "SYS" that shows in the center? Mine does.

It started doing that, but with no other problems for several months, altho I did notice some discrepancies between analog and digital temps - oil & water. But recently, I have been experiencing a very nasty situation: if my engine is cold or hot, it starts fine. If it is warm - meaning somewhere in between "just shut off" hot and "been sitting for a few hours" cold - it won't run. It starts and immediately dies! Then cranks and cranks... a lmost fires, or maybe starts again, and immediately dies.

FWIW - I pulled codes and got a "32" - I think... EGR (which I replaced). What bugs me is that when it starts, it runs fine; no stumble, no missing, just nice and smooth. This problem is intermittent, and definitely connected to the engine temp, so I am not inclined to suspect ignition (Opti) or such.

I don't mean to step on your thread here. I'm just curious if you've seen anything similar, since we have some similar symptoms. Good luck with your problem.

Starts then dies

I had a Buick once that did the same thing, also intermittently and mostly when 'warm.' Turned out it was the ECM. I first cleaned up the ground to the ECM (on the Buick that ground was under the ignition coils) and it helped a lot but eventually had to replace the ECM. My other symptom was that when the car was in 'failure mode' the 'service engine' light did not come on when the key was turned to 'on' - and that was the key indicator to bad ECM/ground for ECM per the service manual - and it was a predictor whether the engine was going to start and run.
Hope this helps
