I have a 78 SAE (stock) & I need a good overall reference manual for the car & all of its components, mechanical, electrical, etc. What is the main difference between a Shop Manual & an Assembly Manual? & what are the advantages of one over the other? or, is their something better than either? ;shrug

Tanks in advance for your help & opinion.

They're both valuable reference sources. Get both if you can. AIM is available on CD now.

Get both, 22in78.

In laymans terms:
A Shop Manual is for the Repair Shop, to check for errors and fix things, ie. troubleshooting..

An AIM (Assembly Manual) shows how the car was put together and helps to find out where parts belong, or need to put back again.

Ditto both the above. GM shop manual and AIM are the best of the four manuals I have for my car.
