Not being a versed mechanic, can anyone help me as to what this part is? (see photo) It runs from what I believe is the exhaust manifold (back cylinder, passenger side) up to the intake manifold. There is a sensor with a wire going into it. I need to replace this sensor since the previous owner opted to repair it with some orange goop. Any help would be appreciated.

This is the EGR pipe, it should also have an insulation sleeve around it, it gets very hot. The wire that goes into it is to the EGR temperature switch.

DITTO, EGR switch Part#609-649 20bucks from Mid-America. Heat shield#609-645 Also 20 bucks Good Luck!!!!:D

You'll need it; sometimes those bolts are frozen on there pretty good. Be sure to soak them in penetrating oil for a while before even attempting to remove them. They can be a PITA sometimes - I had a hell of a time with mine when I went to replace the insulating sleeve. :eyerole

Couple tips...

1. The plug for the EGR sensor wire is usually buried WAY back behind the block. Make sure things are cool before looking for it...

2. Avoid the heat sleeve that velcro's in place so you don't have to remove the pipe. The velcro melts, makes lots of nice smoke, and then the sleeve won't stay together. BTDT.

Sorry :). Been There, Done That.

You know, I think someone posted that in response to one of my first posts here, and I didn't get it either.

The plug for the lead on the EGR switch is behind the distributor. Use some medical hemostats and lots of patience and you can get it apart and plug in the new one. Easy way out, but not my choice is to just cut the wire off of the old plug and splice it to the new plug out in the open where you can get at it. I wouldn't do it that way but some of the parts suppliers include a butt splice with the switch for this purpose. If you do go the splice route I would not use the butt splice, I would solder and insulate with shrink tube for a neat and lasting connection.
