What kind of brake fluid do you use?

My dealers here in Norway have only Dot 4 and Dot 5,1!

I use Dot 5,1 on my other 2 cars and my motorcycle.

But on the filler cap on my vette is said Dot 3! :confused

Hey let's not throw this guy under the bus for asking a question. My understanding is that Dot 5 brake fluid is silicone base and is not compatable with Dot 3 and 4. It also will not melt the paint off if you spill some. That being said it is my understanding that Dot 3 and 4 can be interchanged. So if all you can currently get is 4 it should work in your 91 that calls for 3. However I would consult a brake expert to confirm this.

Hard to get

It`s hard to get Dot 3 ,most have Dot 4 or Dot 5,1.

Not 5, I will not use Dot 5, but 5,1.

Like in my other cars and motorcycle.

Maybe it`s more common with Dot 3 in US!

We do not have 5,1 brake fluid here in the US however I would double check and insure that it is not silicone. Mixing silicone and non silicone can result in brake failure.

I've always heard that 5 is not for cars with ABS.

I did a "Google" on brake fluids and found lots of sites that address the different fluids. Here's what I found:

Either DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 should be okay. DOT3, 4 and 5.1 are ether/glycol based fluids and should be compatible with each other.

DOT 5 is silicon based and should not be used.
