I was thinking of buying a new set of tires and wheels for running, and keep my original equip. tires and wheels from my '93 for some future car show. What is the best way to keep them stored. Tires will be mounted on the wheels, full of air. Should I stack them up sideways, one over the other? 4 high. Or just let them stand on their own(which I think leads to flat spots)? Did I answer my own question or maybe one of you folks out there can advise. Thanks :Steer

If they are nice, you should store them in my garage. ;)

Stack them on their sides, one on top of the other. Don't set them upright on the tread.

And replace the air with nitrogen. Any good truck tire shop should have it.

After a number of years, tires will age to the point where the compounds in the tire will no longer work for traction and tire life. Tires will "Dry out" and they will crack as they get old. It's entirely possible for a tire to fail after years of storage or lack of use. Sometimes the failure can be something as simple as not holding air or the tire can come apart with the car in motion.

If your tires are more than about 8 years old, I would keep them only for show use and not use them for any street use at all. Outside of NCRS type of judging, old cracked tires may even detract from the display.

In any event, keep them stacked in a reasonable climate like a garage, away from direct sunlight or electric motors. You can also get tire bags from a tire store.

Upright. Unstacked. Low pressure.

Do a google search you'll get a million hits.

e.g., http://www.yokohamatire.com/pdf/tsb-112102.pdf

I just did a quick google search, and the only manufacturer to state what you said is Yokohama. Goodyear states on their side with low air pressure. Hoosier states on their side with no air pressure. Cooper says stack them. All of them want the tires stacked so the bottom tire retains it shape, which will be the case of a mounted tire. 1010tires.com states the stacking them offers the most support and should eliminate fitting problems. Michelin and Bridgestone have nothing listed for storage. The remainder of hits I got I dismiss as opinion as they were posted my individuals much like we are here.

What is agreed on is that they should be in bags, stored in a cool dry place away from sources of ozone. So you decide, upright or stacked. Just put them in bags with a little air pressure inside. If you are going to leave them completely flat put the valve core back in. I think your best bet would be low pressure with nitrogen. If your wheels are chrome, moisture can and will lead to issues with the chrome wanting to peel.
