I have my side pipes off and the covers. I was getting things ready for the hot rod shop guy to weld up my headers to the sweet thunder pipes. So I was getting the 'U" clips out that hold the main trim covers on.

I noticed the LIC supplied pack of "U" clips contains 12 clips. The side pipe cover has 4 round holes and 2 "U" holes or a "U" shape cut outs...Or 6 per side.

Now here's the question ..the 2 "U" shaped cut outs will not hold the side cover when the screws are inserted in the clips.. So in fact only 4 screws will hold the cover on.

And The Reason Is..........................?????

Who wants to take a stab at this... Jhon Z Or Bill B...Any One??

Mark the two "U" holes are to fit over the screws that hold the retainer strip that originally held the rocker panel molding on non side pipe cars. The strip gets mounted first and then the side pipe covers over the strip -- that is why they are there. This is also shown in the AIM.

I'm at work John and don't have the AIM in front of me. From what I remember the AIM shows 6 "U" clips to hold the side pipe covers on. Since the original non side pipe car molding is not their...and a "U" clip is shown in it's place for the sipe pipe cover..how will this clip hold anything since the screw is not captive in the "U" shaped hole??

Mark - as I remember, the side pipe covers slip behind the original rocker panel retainer strip. The U holes allow you to tighten the retainer strip. They have no holding power for the sidepipe cover. If you dont have the retainer strip, you may want to just mount the side pipe covers using the four holes. The retainer strips are not real expensive -- like 10 bucks a piece from LICS

Mark, There is a straight piece of steel that goes on first, before the covers themselves. This piece is what the thin rocker panel slips over. (the trim piece above the side pipe covers that hides the screws).

Here is how mine is assembled:

1. Put the steel strip on the body first using the 2 holes that are in the positions of your "U" shaped cutouts. The "deformed" section of the strip goes up.

2. Then put the side pipe covers on next with the remaining 4 screws per side. The heads of the first 2 screws used above fit into those "U" shaped cutouts. That equals 6 clips per side or 12 clips total.

3. The rocker molding slips over the top of the steel piece (with a little persuading) and is held in place with a small screw on each end that goes into the fibreglas.

The rocker panel molding is a thin strip that is different than the large rocker moldings used on non-sidepipe cars.

Make sense?
