Any ideas on how to clean the original aluminum wheels on my 77 vette tried steel wow land a small brush on a dremel

Not sure if those wheels are clear-coated or not. If they are cleared, then I would think that removing the clear-coat would be necessary to get down to the aluminum, so that polishing could occur. If no clear, then a good metal polish should clean them up.

Try Quick-Glow, it works really well. There is an "original" and a "fine" version and is about $15.00-20.00 delivered through E-bay. Jay Leno endorses it, I believe that it is on Youtube as a video. All I know is that the stuff is excellent and worked perfect for me many times. If you have any questions about the product, call the owner of the company, his number is on their website, and he is a wealth of useful information. Good luck with it. :)

One way to tell is with the cleaner being used, ALWAYS start with the mildest first. When using the product with a soft cloth see if the cloth turns black, if it does it is aluminum, if it doesn't then it is clear coated. Be sure not confuse the black (if it does show up) with dirt, after cleaning the surface try it again to see if the cleaned surface turns the rag black. The Fine in Quick-GLO will not harm clear coat, the Original formula can take off clear coat so be careful what you try first. I would call the Quick-Glo owner and get his opinion on your issue, he is a great person and really enjoys to helping people. He is a true car guy. :)

I used CitrusStrip (Home Depot) to soak the 32 year old clearcoat on my wheels overnight and then rinsed them off the next day. I then had an acquaintance with a buffing wheel and lambswool pad polish the wheels, off the car, using his special putty concoction of red and green (equal parts) jewelers rouge and kerosene. He spent 20-30 mins per wheel. He then liberally sprinkled flour (yes, white flour) and gave it a final buffing with the flour using a clean pad. Truckers drive to him from across the country to have him polish their expensive wheels using this method.
My OE aluminum wheels look more like chrome now.

Hope this helps.
