I goofed BIG time guys. I have been using Duragloss all wheel cleaner to clean the brake dust from my wheels and it has been working really well. Then when I couldn't find it in the store I was in, I bought "No More Dust" and tried it on the rear wheels. BIG, HUGE, MASSIVE, MISTAKE!!!

I now have streaks, and it is mottled, BAD. I have tried a Brillo pad, nothing, paint thinner, nothing, even MEK, nothing. Then I tried that stuff again and it didn't do anything.

Now, I know the wheels are supposedly coated with poly but MEK couldn't work? I have used this for YEARS on aluminum on big jets with no problem as it even takes paint off, I mean it'll take ANYTHING off.

So, what should I do? Any polish?

Please help a desperate and STOOPID soul!!
:mad ;help :bash :confused :eyerole :ohnoes :puke

Do you have a Pic of the Wheels ? I wanted to see if the coating is Damaged .

I will take a couple of them now, and post them in a few minutes. THANKS!!!

Paul, I think you are going to have to strip the wheels of the clearcoat. I think the stuff to use is an aircraft paint stripper, TalStrip-2 Aircraft stripper, which won't affect the aluminum wheel. I really need to do this to my pickup wheels, as I have done what you have...picked up a cleaner I thought was safe on the clearcoat but fogged the poo-poo out of it.

I made a similar mistake with the wheels on my 1982.

Have you tried Mother's Aluminum Polish?
It worked very well for me.
You can still see the marks if you get VERY close and look VERY carefully, but it is a lot better than it was.

How did you get pictures of my wheels. Something I found by mistake one time while working on the clutch of my motorcycle. I used Prestone spray gasket remover and boy did it remove the gasket the clear coat and any paint it touched.

Man, if it wasn't for this forum I'd be pulling my hair out. Thanks Tom, thanks minifridge, and lt14, I snuck up on you car and just took them tonight! You didn't see the flash?

Anyway, I'm going to try to strip them and then polish them with Mother's. I KNEW I'd have to strip them but I'll have to make sure I remove the center plastic piece or buy some new ones at Eckler's.

You guys have been a BIG help.

Thanks a LOT.

Paul

My new right hand man on the left hand side,(Ernest T.Bass) took 1 look and left, said he was walkin to Atlanta to throw rocks at you!! That is if Andy and Barney don't catch him first!:D:D:D

Yep,I believe your gonna have to strip, polish and re-coat them with urethane!:hb:hb:hb

Junk, he left?!?! Why? Greener pastures? Is he coming to Atlanta? Da big city? And....why in the world would he want to throw rocks at me?? I live in a glass house!!;LOL

Yup, I am going to strip 'em, Mother's 'em, and poly them. I'll protect the rubber with metal "speed tape" while I strip them and poly them and mask the car off to boot. I used to be a big time woodworker and lemme tell ya, spray poly gets EVERYWHERE!! They need it anyway.

But now I have yet ANOTHER new problem Junk. Since it got REAL cold here, (43 degrees) tonight at 11:30 PM while Robin and I were going to her Mom's house and back we were listening to creaks all around. All four corners. Creaking big time. Shocks?

Lemme know what U think Junkie.
