My '80 has 255/60/15 tires. I want to do some serious auto crossing. Would I be a lot better served to go to say a 255/45/18 wheel/tire combo, but at a cost of hundreds of dollars, or just add a few pounds of air to the tires that I have? Other words, how much would the modern wheel/tire combo help me out?

Depending on what you buy. Wheels around $1,000.00 tires around $1,000.00 to $1,500.00.

I suggest that that you try playing around with the tire pressure first. I would under inflate rather that over inflate. But, why not try both.

I usually under inflate when we make canyon runs. I have 18's.

Tire choice depends on the class you plan to enter also.
If you have to use stock size tires and wheels - it would be nice to know before spending the extra money.
Also, there are autocross specific tires you can get - again: what class do you want to race in?
Have you been to an autocross recently? If not, get out and see what the current racers are running at the track you plan to race at.
