I am rebuilding a 283 motor I found for my 61 Vette. The #2 main caps seems to be out of whack. The clearance is very tight. If I swop #2 cap & #3 cap #2 is always tight and #3 is always in spec. I think the #2 cap has been messed with somehow. Anyway does anyone know where I might find a small journal main bearing cap 283-327? Thanks for any help.

You might try Accelerated Motion for parts. They have an extensive listing for rebuild kits as well as a ton of parts. I scanned the list briefly, but didn't immediately see a main bearing cap. If it's not available new, you might also try J&D Corvette for used stuff. You might also try Tracy Performance for a wide range of used parts.

If it's too tight why don't you take the block to your local machine shop and have them check it out. May just need align honed. If you use a cap off of another block it will have to be align honed anyhow and maybe align bored. Since the caps are finish bored on the block it would be rare that another cap would line up without machine work.
