Which Headers...

I pulled a set of full length headers off of mine, they were the old Cyclone anti-reversionary headers (that idea never seemed to take off for them), and I had so much room that I was able to pull them up and out of the engine compartment with ease. I used a set of Sanderson "shorty" headers for a while and I couldn't tell any horsepower loss between the full lenth and the shorty design. In fact, if you go to sanderson's web site, they have a faq that goes into the myth of loss of power between the two styles.

I'm now going with hooker side pipe headers with the spiral turbo inserts. Not necessarily for a power upgrade, but just because I love the look and sound. I have had headers ceramic coated and I must stress that this is the best modification to headers that money can buy. I was completely amazed at the reduction of heat (the ceramic coating guys claim a 60% reduction in temps, but your mileage may vary), both under the hood and in the cockpit. I will ceramic coat any exhaust system I use on all my vehicles in the future. And the nice side point is that the ceramic coating looks great!

From what I've been reading, although I'm not 100% on this, but the ceramic coated headers lower the temps under the hood, and even cool to the touch in around 10min. This is just what I've read though, I don't know for sure.

Chris: Don't believe everything 'ya read. I sure don't wanna touch my ceramic headers only after the motor is shut off for ten minutes. Although the headers are cooler, they probably are really still to warm to the touch. (OUCH)

np, 15 years is a long time. I still need to talk this over with my dad since I'll be "letting" him do most of hard stuff :) he was the one who suggested the block hugger since he thought they would be easier to put on. I hope I can talk him into the long tube.

Thanks again,
-Chris

t is easy to install ..On the passenger side from the top and driver side from the bottom.....I have had them on my car for 2 years......still look new and no leaks with percy's aluminum Gaskets

Chris,

The headers I installed are Blackjack Alumincoat A5000 made by Dynomax. I think they are still available but probably under a different name. Alumincoat is very much like Powder coating. I accidentally ordered ones without the O2 sensor and had to have a hole drilled and a metal block welded on and then a tapped some thread to sccept the O2 sensor. Check the Dynomax webite. www.dynomax.com I did not use the gaskets they sent, but rather bought good Felpro gaskets at the heads and at the collectors. Either way, I did not have to cut or mod anything on my '81 to get them to fit. They look great 15 years later.

Hope this helps............... Bob

Hi "Nut": Like me, sounds like you're "dating" yourself. I've got a pair of "EAGLE" headers (use to be chrome, but now are HPC-Powdercoated). They look great for a set of 25 year old headers. you may be right, I don't think "Blackjack" headers are around anymore. But, they were sure popular in their time.............Dave

One more Thing: My headers were a breeze to install. Both slid in from the top "slicker than owl's ****" on my '72. The fit was perfect

I got a question regarding the ceramic-coated DYNOMAX headers. Is there an 82-only header they make, with the 02-sensor fitting? If so, can any member give me the DYNOMAX part #? If there is NOT a coated header made WITH the fitting, does it 'screw-up' the coating by welding-on a fitting? Any/all help greatly appreciated.....

Dave.... indeed we are dating ourselves. :D

Glen.... I'm pretty sure the Dynmax headers do come with the O2 sensor fitting. I just screwed up and didn't order the right ones. No matter, my "modification" has worked perfectly all these years.

............... Nut
