hi folks,

just getting my feet wet on engine upgrades and would like to know if anyone has any comments/experience with a TPIS mini- ram vs. Lingenfelter super ram intake system. this would be my first real $$ spent and woud like some advice from those of you in the know.

much regards for the help.

I don't know a whole lot, but I've been paying attention to this issue as well recently. I'm going to try to find a recent post of mine looking for advice on putting together a new engine combo. I need to add a post to it.

69MyWay seems to have a good understanding on these different intakes. He has pointed out that the miniram and thelLT1 stock intake conversion are virtually the same and perform quite well. The LT! conversion being about half the price of the miniram.

The SR provedes more low end torque and is also quite expensive. Additionally, these things can be a real PITA to R&R. I have seen many posts of horror stories. Although, apparently the more times you take em off and put em back on, the quicker and easier it goes. Once they are properly installed it seems they work quite well. An SR without additional mods will not do you much if any good though. I don't know about the others without mods but I don't really recall seeing anyone posting about them without changes to cam, headers and exhaust.

I will probably have either a miniram or LT1 convesion intake for sale as well as a NIB Lingenfelter 219 cam in the bear future.

Hope this helps a little. Welcome to:CAC

Moonunit, do you have the roller-cam retrofit kit to sell as well? I'm installing the same cam, and like you have an 86, which was the last year for the flat-tappet cams.

thanks Moonunit...good info.

i was trying to determine weather i should progress with a top/down vs. down/up formula on engine mods. i suppose there's no getting around simply starting off with the metal if i want outright preformance.

thanks again.

Miniram has had some distribution problems, not enough air getting into the cylinders, but its a more rare problem and can be fixed with the right tuner.
Its easier to install than the SR.

what intake you pick depends on how high you want to spin the motor and where you want your power

SR for low end, midrange and substantially more top end than TPI, you can easily spin it to 6500 but after 6K it starts to drop good.
MR for real rev motors, makes its power in midrange and top end.
Stealthram should be a little of both, enough bottom, plenty of midrange and good top end.

The miniram does not have air distribution problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those that have reported that they do is due to camshaft lsa being too low, narrow or what ever the correct term is(110 or less) or **** poor tuning/running car which will cause fouling plugs and such on any modified car.

I'de like to swap to a stealthram one day but i'de like to see more test done on it before making a swap.

As far as the superram goes, I had one and will never run one again just because it is too f'n challenging to install and remove. I remember getting a good back massage everytime I had to remove and reinstall that thing, which was about 3 times.

I understand the plenum size (larger) gives up some low end torque. I don't notice in my 406, which pulls hard low and all the way to 6.5k. If you go this way, get RTV black and use the tube. After it dries, clean the excess with a sharp knife. That, my friend, is the easy part.

Accel was exchanging some of the cast units for newer billet ones due to machining issues/ poor fit and seal. The runner ports did not match the plenum too well, and Ling guys said not to bother with polishing any of the internals for my application.

A friend runs his 406 well with a Lingenfelter intake, AZ Speed/Marine runners and a stock plenum. Personally, I like the TPIS unit with the injectors 'out there' easing service. I liked their support, too.
