I'm thinking of getting headers, and a true dual exhaust this summer for my 81, and was wondering what you guys recomended for mufflers. I want something that sounds as close to stock as possible at in town RPMs, but I want it to scream when I step on it =). Any recomendations? I don't have much cash to spare, so cheaper is better =).

Thanks in advance =)

Flowmasters......they are heavy duty.....wont let you down....i had some stainless mufflers on mine when i purchased it....it had a little timing problem, ( off 12' !)it backfired and blew the side out of one of the stainless....when i picked up the flowmaster , i knew there is now way it could happen with them....thick steel cans.the sound cant be beat.:bu

Flowmaster 40's .....They sound wicked . I am running Dynomax headers, 2.5 inch pipe with an H pipe and Flowmaster 40's...Flow great and sounds mean

Does anyone have the approximate cost on Flowmasters 40 series and 50 series 2 1/2" inlet.

Thanks, Gary

Okay.. I see that most people want quiet inside noise, but a little rumble when they step on it.... what do I get if I want rumble all the time? I mean rumble like everyone on the street wakes up when your warming her up at 7 am... loud at idle, loud at full throttle... hehehe it may just be cause im a "kid" but there is nothing better then knowing everyone can hear your v-8 coming down the road. I havent seen this question asked before so I thought id ask, thanks for any responses.

re:

I'm a "kid" also, and want the quieter exahaust to try and keep some attention away from myself... the cops around where I live think that because I'm 20 and driving a vette that I probably am selling drugs, so they always give me a hard time. The less attention when you're young and driving a vette the better.

if you want loud don't use a muffler =) I hear that monzas are loud though.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like Flowmaster 40s is what I'll be getting, I just hope I have enough spare cash this summer to do it, I gotta finish the interior first though.

I have had the Flowmasters 40's and 50’s.. If your not looking to draw attention to yourself then going with the flowmasters is a mistake in my mind. Both the 40’s and 50’s were to loud for me, that’s why I went with the Borla’s.. All stainless and they sound awesome, not too loud and a great sound.

Just my two cents..

Well its good to have another "kid" out there driving a vette. And I love drawing attension to myself! Im a vette, its kinda hard not to.. hahaha. And the cops can bother me all they want... i dont do drugs so they can search and search and find nothing... I dont speed either.. much.. okay they got me on that! I was looking at the monzas.. look pretty nice, expensiiive though.. and i wish i could go with no mufflers, but I still got a few years left till I dont have to smog test anymore. Thanks for the feedback.

How could timing ruin that sort of thing? How is that affected by it?

Thanks! :D

Then run the 40's flowmasters........Evertime I drive through a parking deck all the alarms go off....I love that.Heh heh:beer

I've got Dynomax super turbos- got rid of an expansion chamber system. I used the 2-1/2" pipes, idle sounds like what I think a vette should! Open road is quiet, based on the noise from the chambered system. Much better for long drives.

i was told it was running rough when i bought it , because it had old gas and carbon build up......so i took it out on the freeway and was rolling along at 60 mph when i decided to dump it....well when the 4 bbl kicked in things got ugly performance wise.....so i let off on the throttle , that is when i had a MASSIVE backfire.....all of a sudden my car is REAL loud.....i didnt see parts out the rearview mirror so i went to the house and looked underneath.
Wow....that was some explosion......there is a seam in these mufflers that were on it, and one was blown out down the seam....top to bottom.the reason the timing was at fault is that i had unburned fuel in the exhaust system that wasnt burning when it should and when it dumped it the 4 bbls really added to it...when that fuel hit the red hot exhaust ....well the rest is history.
timing is set now and my vette flys!:bu

i also love it when i drive by a car with an alarm and it goes off!
what a cheap kick!
