Need help---Just bought a 2004, drove it back from Atlanta GA to Texas. It has a whine that sounds like it is comming from the back end. The noise seems to stop when the gas is let off. We stopped at a Chev. dealer in Alabama, had the transmission oil and differential checked, no smell and full. We made it back home but the mechanic we have now taken it to seems to think it could be the transmission. The car has been upgraded with stage 1 and 2 from MTI racing and only has 7,000 miles on it. Any tech help, related experience or thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, first off, I'd like to welcome you to CAC. I can't help you with your question, but I'm guessing someone will be by shortly who might have a suggestion.

Did this whining just start on the trip back home or was it doing this when you first started out? Have you contacted the party that you bought it from? Maybe they can shed some light.

We were told there was not anything wrong with the car, but the whining immediately started when we got on the highway. We called the previous owner and he was not aware of anything being wrong with the car but did say he was hard of hearing. Hopefully he will stand behind his word and reimburse us for work that has to be done to correct the problem.

If it still has BadYear RunCraps on it,Thats probly your noise!!:thumb
If it's a 6sp,there a little noisier than a automatic!!:thumb:thumb

whine

The transmission is automatic. Hope it is just a bad bearing.:upthumbs

Thanks for jumping in here Jesse. I'm with you on the Goodyears, they are noisy tires.

Depends on how loud the whine is. I picked up a whine in my 02 last year on the way back from Cleveland CF. Since I am hard of hearing, it could have been there before the trip. c4C5 specialist at Fun Fest thought it could be the air pump or the fuel pump. It could also be the Goodyear EMTs as they are down to there last useful tread. Changing them next Spring when I take the 02 out of storage.

It could be the rear end gears also. Does the whine start around the 35-40mph mark and progressively get louder and higher pitched the faster you go? When you let off the gas it stops because the gears are not forced together.

I have the whine in my stock 01 with a 6 speed. There is very little noise at 40 mph, but get loud at highway speeds. Goes away when I back off the gas.

Do you have some experience with the rear end gears going out? Love the car, need to change out the tires, but this is NOT a tire noise. I was thinking the Torque Tube Bushings or Bearings.

Thanks for any suggestions.
