Took my 64 out last night....everything is originial and as far as I know a lot has not been changed out or touched. When I sit at idle without the clutch engaged I hear a pretty good whirring noise, when I depress the clutch it goes away.
Is that normal for these cars? Should it be more quiet? Comments on wht it might be and the degree of difficulty to fix it?

thanks

If it's unusually loud, it has to be bearings in the transmission - either the main input shaft bearing, the rollers in the countershaft, or the input shaft-to-mainshaft rollers. The input shaft (and everything else in the transmission) stops when you depress the clutch, which is why you don't hear it then; may be time for a rebuild.

How hard is it to rebuild the stock transmission? How hard is it to get out? Novice here......so some good guidance would be great!

thanks!

oh yes.....is there a good place to rebuild stock 64 4 speed transmissions?

If your box is good and changes well you may just need a new thrust bearing and while you are down there just check the clutch plate for wear , you may even save yourself a few bucks.
To check the thrust bearing (between the box and clutch pressure plate inside the bell housing) see if you can spin it free with your hand and if shot it will spin realy free and noisy.
Good luck

I doubt it - he said the noise goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed, which puts the throwout bearing under load and in contact with the clutch fingers; he hears the noise with the clutch disengaged (pedal up against the stop), and the throwout bearing isn't touching anything with the pedal up.

Nutz is right thats just what happens for when the thrust bearing is under load it will not make anymore noise.
Have done a few of these over the years.
