I'm gonna go ahead and do it -- convert my digital display to analog gauges, but I have a decision to make still...

In my quest for self-personalization of my Corvette, I wanted (And still want for the matter!) something different; not just the same old VDO/Autometer/Stewart-Warner/etc. selection that everybody seems to go for. Initially, I was pretty much decided on the ISSPRO line of gauges, but ran into difficulty with having to add complexity to my existing wiring and sending units.
  • I'm looking to simplify things here and not make them more difficult, that's why the aftermarket alarm and stereo are history. ;)

I then looked at GM Performance stuff but discovered there is only one speedometer offering, and the face on that unit is white, while the other gauges I chose were black-faced.

Of course both options (white or black) are available with most of the other manufacturers, so that leaves me with the decision of whether I should go with all white face gauges, or get the GM Performance oil pressure/oil temperature, coolant temperature, fuel level and fuel pressure gauges in black-face, and use the GM Performance black-face tach with a black-faced speedometer from someone else, probably the Autometer Phantom series.

Or should I go with all white-faced gauges? I prefer a business-like appearance, so that leaves out the gauges that look like your driving down the Strip in Vegas! :L

Bear in mind I'm trying to stay simple, which means not having to add stuff for the gauges to work, like signal amplifiers and senders, etc.
  • I think I'm probably going to stick with mechanical water temperature, oil pressure/oil temperature and fuel pressure gauges, while the voltmeter and fuel level gauges will obviously be electrical.

What is your preference? :confused

go with black can't go wrong ;)

besides white looks too mustangish and even a bit rice imo :L

Ken, When I get home I'll email you a link to a company I found in Canada that can replicate any gauge with any color. They quoted me a very reasonable price to do white faced gauges in my ZR-1 with custom ZR-1 logos silk-screened on the front of them.

The black faced gauges will blend in more to the dash... white will stick out. If you are undecided on which ones you like best, another question you may want to answer is what do you want other people to see? Do you want to have people notice as they walk by at the strip or at a show, to possibly strike up conversation? or do you prefer to keep a mostly stock looking interior...

so, stand out = white, blend in = black.

Do you think you can send it to me as well? I'm very interested in redoing my dash unit one day.

I do tend to lean towards keeping a "low-profile" and maintaining simplicity with my Vette. :cool

Well Jay, where's my e-mail? :L

Simplicity I believe... low-profile? Isn't it hard to not stand out when you have such a cool car?

Well,

The GM Perfomance gauges are made by Autometer, st least use to be.

I would go with Autometer Phantoms, but that is my personal preference

Thanks for the heads-up Jeff, about GM and Autometer's connection. ;)

Now I gotta go back to Autometer's site to check the compatibility of sending units.

Ken,

In my opinion, the challenge is to find a analog style gauge that still blends with the high tech sleek profile of the C4. Most of the a/m gauges are more classic in design, and or street-rod'ish.

Remember in the 80's lettering was very blocky, and things were more low profile and bland, to blend in to the overall look.

If you get the dash too flashy, it will look all mixed up.

Although I love bright faced gauges, my vote is to go with black or graphite faces, orange needles, and white/silver letters. The bezels need to be black, and at the most flashy, you should get a carbon fiber plate to mount them in, (because the black graphite look is a perfect match), and sink that into your dash. It would be a nice touch, low profile, but full of fun to look at them.

Oh, and Autometer stuff is great. That is what I have in Killer and the are awesome! I have the fully electric models (electric speedo, temp, oil...etc). You will also want the autometer fuel PRESSURE gauge. I have that one as well, and it is nice to see how much PSI is on the rail at all times. It is very save and 100% electric with a small sealed sender for your fuel rail.

This is an old thread...

The deed has been done, I decided a long time ago and posted in "My Engine Project..." thread but forgot about this one. :o

Proof once again (someone just cast another vote) that people vote and do not, I repeat, do not read the thread. I made my decision on the gauge setup I'd be running, I thought I made that clear. :L

I'm closin' the poll, but I'll leave the thread open. Fire away! ;LOL
