I am new to Corvette's after having owned Mustang's for the last 20 years. I now have a 1992 Corvette Auto with 71K miles. Generally speaking the best seat of the pants and bang for the buck can be found in the gears. In your opinion, what gears will work best 345 or 373 (Without killing too much top end/fuel economy or having to change the converter? )

I have a bone stock Corvette and would like to get it running Mid 13's.. It runs 14.2 @ 100 now..

I will eventually do all the free horsepower stuff to the car, such as 160 thermostat, relocating the air sensor, and cutting out the air cleaner. Possibly the 1.6 Rockers.

Does it really benefit me to go with a Cat back system? It seems to me the weak spot is just the mufflers, and quite honestly, what’s the size difference between the pipes on the stock resonator and axle pipes versus say Flowmasters or Dynomax etc?? I am also not happy with doing away with the cool looking square tail pipe.

My goal with the exhaust is to get away from my car sounding like a inboard outboard boat at full throttle. If I can gain a little horsepower in the process, great!

I guess you have the non-performance rear now, and maybe also can use a good tune up. (Not a TUNE) As a good stock running 92 with a 3.07 rear shouldnt even break a sweat to run in the 13s.

I dont know conditions the day you ran the 14.2, but I would go with the simple mods you listed and a 3.73 rear as it wont really hurt top end or mileage too much with the auto overdrive. The 3.45 isnt bad and the stock ratio for the six speed manual may be easier to swap in an entire "bat wing" insted of having the ring and pinion installed.

I had a Corsa system ansd it was one of the biggest wastes of $900 I ever spent ($1200+ now)

Anyway - I ran a best of 13.40 with the simple mods listed below. Auto trans with the 3.07 rear.

One of the first changes I did to my 93 A4 car was 3.73 gears and it does provide a huge improvement to the launch and low end. For me however the increased engine RPM at freeway speed was too much. The car is not a daily driver so true mileage was never calculated but it did drop significantly.
I have since replaced the D36 with a D44 in the 3.45 ratio and feel it is just about right, still has good low end but mileage and freeway manners are better.
If you can swing the money, strongly consider doing the torque converter at the same time as the gear swap, the trans comes out way easier once the rear end is removed, many of the same parts have to be removed to do either job and the modifications compliment each other nicely.

I dynoed my 94 last year, (all stock). 270hp/ 301tq.

STOCK:In the 1/4mi, my best was 13.75 @ 101mph.

Additions made 2 weeks ago include: Ram-Air intake, 1.6rr, LT4 springs, Hooker shorty headers.

No dyno yet, (because I'm not finished modding)

, but I do have new 1/4mi times that show a good improvement over stock.

After bolt-ons: 13.231 @106.39mph.

I have a set of 3.73s ready to go in this summer. (12s are in my future)
