Who has replaced the standard radio

Unless you change the base mounts for the frame of the seat, I doubt that six stacked cd's would fit under there. Let alone a changer unit. Kenwood has one that looks like it'll fit in the rear center compartment. Else pull the glove box and put one in there. Plenty of room.

Whoops!!! My 79 is modern enough to have a place to stow registration, insurance papers a few CD's and my 45 in the glovebox.

Why go to a Changer option? You've got a computer. Rip CD's to MP3 Format. I recently put an MP3/Reciever in my wife's Cherokee. I get 164 songs on one CD! Custom music lists.

It doesn't get any better than that.

I just like the idea of having a tape deck in the car with "CORVETTE" all over it :D

yb.dll

looks nice

I *could* put an mp3 player in there (considering that I have 3000+ mp3s :o) but i just prefer the vette thingy.

I can get an mp3 stacker too :D

I've got my 6-disc changer in the "tool box" -- the box behind the passenger seat. Pulled the cardboard insert out, mounted the changer, ran the cable under the carpet & up through the center console to the Custom Autosound AM/FM cassette/CD controller, and voila! I did get Custom Autosound to make me a custom cable, though.... the original one plugged 'straight' into the back of the radio, and with the heat, vibration, and all, got crimped & messed up after not too much use. They sent me one with "L" type connectors on each end, and it's worked great since.

GOTTA HAVE TUNES

I found it unbearable and annoying to continue to listen to the stock stereo. After four years of NOT being able to enjoy decent tunes, I had it.
IMHO - it's O.K. to update the stereo. The value of your car won't (and never will) be solely decided on a stock radio. What's the WORST thing that it can do....lower the price a few bucks?????
Forget originality when it comes to tunes. You can bet, 50/50 the next owner will.
If it's the original radio from when the car was built - by all means, KEEP IT, (in a box stored away.)

I Gutted everything, cut the console, cut the kick plates and built a speaker console box for the back.
I now have a Pioneer AM/FM CD Player, 2: 5-1/4" Dia. speakers in the kick panels, (old dash speakers in place, but disconnected)
2: 6" x 9" along with 2: Tweeters mounted in the back.

Now, I can finally enjoy good tunes while driving down the road.
This was ALL VERY worth it.

P.S. Now that I have a decent Stereo installed, The ONLY thing I can hear above the music is my wife yelling:
"TURN IT DOWN":_rock

I put in a alpine Mp3/Cd player and it is really sweet....I have some pics if someone want to see them I put polk audios in the dash and kick panels and two infiniti Kappa's in the rear.......witha 200 watt amp sounds SWEET...But not as good as the flowmaster 40's

I ordered a replacement console and then cut the provision out for the CD player. Yeah, its a bit drastic but I love this radio! I have the one I have always wanted in every car I have ever had - Multiple frequency EQ built into the head unit. Its a similar model to Alwyn's.

You use the radio's cage to supply the pattern for the shape. Then cut it out with a dremel. Too easy.

how to wire

Corvette Craig, Alwyn678, DarkShark 78,
How did you wire these units? I think they all need both ignition and constant power to keep the presets and EQ settings. How do you keep from draining the battery?

:confused

-awaiting CD obsolescense...

-recent international Vegas/Electronics-show revealed they are comming out soon with a fully solid-state WMX-card about the size of a stick of chewing-gum, that is equivalent to an entire CD-album (much like the card in your digital-camera) whereby you can simply load-in up to twenty of these suckers at $2.95/ea. (or you can even record music from stations as you drive!!); ---to be introduced initially just for C3-Vettes as a black-faced Radio with the original L&R/control-knobs, a black-out graphic-display, a dozen presets, 8/variable-equilizers for base/treble, and thundering 100-watts-X4 quad-stereo, auto-antenna, and all just plugs-in to your existing C3 wiring-harness; --so am not getting my balls in an uproar presently about adapting to old-technology like CD's...

:eek :confused :( ;LOL

New technology may arrive, but the CD is here to stay for a long time. The CD and its music format is too embedded as a media and is still a good choice for many applications.

I will be installing a CD/MP3 player soon into my C3, and see no reason to look back. Except for making sure my new receiver is capable of playing CDs. In fact the entire sound system will get ripped out and replaced. The stock system will collect dust on the shelf. My car will never be one of these magnificent one of a king rebuilt corvettes. There were over 40,000 made during 1981. Mine will be driven and kept up as I see fit. Then driven some more. I doubt the radio will stop the next owner from paying close to top dollar.

thats my story and I'm sticking to it,
1981

Vette/Berlina-coupe,

You have me curious now - and wanting some more info. Do you have a company name or a web site with more details?

Thanks,
Culprit

I just have a quick question for those of you who have the speaker boxes in the back of your 78-82's. I was wondering how much room you have left to put your T-Tops back there with the boxes in place??Have you been getting a thinner style box or custom making them??

Custom made out of 1" particle board. Room for a couple of 6x9's and a single 10" sub. Room for the T's, but not if the seats are all the way back. (my amp is behind the drivers seat.) But if I redesigned the box to be supported with end legs, the T's could fit under with plenty of room for the seats to be all the way back. I'll send a photo if you email me.

Thanks Steve,
I have seen those boxes in the Corvette Sellers mags but figured $100.+ for them was a bit much.I figured I'd see what others on here were doing then get out the trusty old saw and go to work on building some. Are they just boards with no sides or back or are they enclosed??
Thanks again,
Tim

Two 6x9 JBL 3ways. $100. One custom crossover, $40. One 10" Pioneer Sub. $60. Half sheet of 1" particle board, $25. Box is not ported. Fully enclosed. Glued/screwed at all surfaces. Separate cavern for each speaker. Stuffed with R19 insulation. Completely covered with speaker box carpet. This will not sound like some tuner running 400+ watts. Tight bass with 200 watts. Not thump.

Receiver mounting kit

For those of you that cut out your bezel to install a standard size receiver-- do you need to purchase a mounting kit to attach to the bezel for the receiver to attach to, besides what comes included with the receiver itself?

Thanks,
Andy

The cage that came with the din receiver worked fine for me. I actually used the cage as the template/pattern for my cut.
