WHY Callaway?

May I be so blunt to ask why you've chosen the Callaway? I know why I love them but what made you decide to buy one? Can you also add what, if not your current one, is your dream Callaway? By the way, I have a '86 Torch red Convertible. My wife first noticed this car, it was always a dream car but to far away for my wallet. Then when she needed a car I wanted a V8 and when we went out looking at a Buick Boottail she knew she was running out of options and she pointed our newest family member...it's not a Callaway but I do love this car.

I very good friend actually owned the one I now I own. I drove it a couple of times and, being a Corvette lover, just thought it was one of the most awesome vehicles I had ever driven. When he got ready to sell it, knowing how much I liked the car, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. There's a lot more I could say about him (his hobby is his business, he buys, mods, plays with and sells/auctions Corvettes and other exotic vehicles) and this story; but the bottom line is the Callaway deal turned a dream into a fantasy come true.

I do own my dream Callaway, and here is my story...

I can still recall the first Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette I saw. It was a black-on-black coupe sitting in the local dealerships showroom. Unable to keep my eyes off it, I stared at every detailed inch for what was probably hours… Not long after that, my first taste of the Callaway power came when another B2K coupe thundered past on the local roads, those megaphones were so unique, so brash, a sound yet to be reproduced anywhere.

In 1989, I bought my first Corvette; a standard black-on-black coupe with memories of that Callaway etched permanently in my head. Soon after, I took it to the track to see what it could do. It was at the drag strip that I encountered that same thundering B2K wearing the megaphones. Lined up to run, it was over before it even really got started, 12.7 in the quarter mile for an 87 B2K.

Over the years, I never really got the Callaway Corvettes out of my mind. Going to the Corvettes @ Carlisle show every summer didn’t help my Callaway fever and every now and then I would think about buying one. With family obligations and already having a few toys, I kept putting it off…

I put it off until one fall day in 2000. After searching for a new motorcycle and coming up dry, my wife suggested I go talk to the owner of a red AeroBody B2K that was always sitting outside not far from our house. When we knocked on the door, the owner answered and I asked about the car. He was more than willing to share the details, as it tuned out it was his fifth Callaway, after having dozens of other Vettes over the years. He also mentioned this one was for sale. He generously threw me the keys to the car and said I could take it for a drive; this would be my first driving experience in a B2K. While he accompanied me for the initial ride, the owner encouraged me to open the car up. However, I wasn’t ready for the power when the turbos hit – the front end lifted, the tail squatted, and she took off like a rocket ship!

When we pulled back into his driveway, he said, “you’ll be back in an hour or so, right?

I was speechless, “sure” I mumbled. What a drive that was, taking it down the back roads and rowing the gears of that 1989 AeroBody convertible in the brisk fall season made returning the car not easy, I was more addicted than ever before.

Although I passed on the purchase of that car, I soon afterwards, purchased another 1989 Callaway, an AeroBody Coupe. The Callaway B2K I purchased is like new and totally original. Driving that car is an experience I liken to the unique experiences we encounter in life, best when savored…

It was that fact that led to my next Callaway purchase. While I enjoy the B2K, I wanted another car to drive with the looks and power; I found that in a 1993 Callaway SuperNatural 425 AeroBody convertible. Ruby red inside and out, this 40th anniversary car is an eye catcher with the power to move. It is the favorite car of my oldest daughter who insists we always ride with the top down.

While each of these cars makes power in a different way, they are unmistakably “Powerfully Engineered Automobiles”, as Callaway’s creed states.

I want to add; the Callaway ownership experience isn’t just about the cars themselves. I have met many enthusiastic owners and through the various events participated in, we all have a blast and the camaraderie is second to none!

I fell in love with the b2k when I was in 8th grade. The look of the shiney intercoolers a top the already cool looking L98 did me in. Fast forward ~14yrs later, I just turned 27, got back on my feet after a 9-11 layoff, my girlfriend and I split...so I started shopping and a few months later, bought a Callaway.

My wonderbar'ed/no cats b2k makes 500hp/675tq...not too shabby.

I guess I fit the "enthusiast" description......I was just starting to take an interest in Corvettes after my first trip to NCM. The Sledgehammer happen to be on display while I was there and that car just amazed me!! I eventually found my way here to the Callaway forum where everyone has been great. Not only are the cars incredible but the people who own them are just as awesome..........

Now......I've just got to get my own!!!

I guess the Callaway sort of grows on you or me. In the beginning it didn't bother me that much. But having to listen to Peer's never ending stories and after seeing and hearing the #10 I'm starting to fall in love...sort of but it's the technology that's appealing to me....yumm, I would love to have a chat with Reeves, just to understand why he made specific choices. That would be fascinating. It's not the success but to understand why he did what he did when nobody knew him...

How do I explain this? Many, many people are doing their modifications as they see fit. Reeves followed an idea...making one of the best racing machines ever. We've seen a report on Discovery and they've tested a Porsche, Ferrari and a Callaway. They've hooked up the testdrivers to all kinds of measuring devices and you could actually see the driver in de Callaway enjoying himself....

So somebody started with an idea and I would like to know what choices did he had and which proved to be essential for his succes now.
