Help! why cant i charge my phone using cigarette lighter ?

What can i do? the lighter works fine, but when i plug phone charger or anything else that needs power nothing happens. anyone had the same problem? mine is an 87 vette thanks

I have had similar issues with some adapters on my 1989 and it has all brand new parts. The issue is no contact, usually on the outside (ground). First try the adapter at different postions. This helps most of the time. The best solution I found was a y extension that allows me to plug in two devices. For some reason it has no issue making proper contact.

I have stopped using that port since I have had batteries last a very short time once they have been charged by the car. Not sure why.

My 1989 is the same way, even the 12V vacuum won't work. I don't think it was designed as a power port.

i have ZR1 90 . i used lighter port to charge my external GPS device and my HP pocket pc. both have same power car adapter and woking fine,with no issues !

Back when I had my 87 my cell phone was in a bag. Remember those units. My current cell phone and vacum and whatever else works fine in my 92. Perhaps as it has been said that the older units were not designed for all these modern gadgets we can't live without.
