I'm wanting to cool the air in the engine compartment, especially the air being delivered to my open element air cleaner w/ K&N filter. My long range goal is to install an L-88 Hood and seal off the air cleaner and pull 100 percent cool air from the windshield. In the meantime while I'm saving up my pennies, Why not duct in cool air from the front with the stock ducting set-up, into the engine compartment, leave the hood up (rear open style). I would use a small wood block with velcro to prop it up about 2 inches to release heat. a complete flow-thru, bringing more air in thru the ducts because of having the hood raised in the rear? when I need to close the hood for security purposes, I just pop out the wood block and close the hood. Am I just dreaming here or do I have some real benefit?

Just a thought... what about temporarily put more shims under the hood strikers? It would 'raise' the hood and still lock. I am not an engineer, so I do not know the benefit of raising the hood as you have suggested.

With the hood poped up in the rear you would just dump all the hot air, fumes, and toxic gases right into the passanger compartment. That you don't want. The rear of the hood should be sealed at all times. The underhood air can exit out under the car or through the side gills.

Tom73, not tryin to argue with you, but wouldn't this be the same as the cowl induction hood using the high pressure bubble of air in front of the windshield? I have had water droplets on the windshield not even think about moving at highway sppeds so I know my 82 nose throws the incoming wind over the top of the windshield.

I have never driven with the hood released so I don't know if the airflow from under the hood would interfere with this pressure. Also, wouldn't the hood have a tendency to float up in the air if it was not secured at the rear?

blue82, thanks for your input, I took it out for a test drive at 65 the hood is steady as a rock, no movement. as for as the fumes and such coming in the passenger compartment, there's a simple solution, put the windows up. could we have a couple of others weigh in on this issue?

With a cowl induction hood everything is sealed to the carb. With the rear of the hood open to the engine compartment you will have more air movement from the engine compartment into the cowl area canceling out the high pressure bubble.

The windows are not the problem. The HVAC systems take air from the cowl for use in the interior. A hood that is open at the rear will dump the hot air, fumes, and toxic gases into the cowl area. It will then flow directly into the passanger compartment. Even if you try to close everything up they will still leak.

When I bought my '70 at Carlisle this year, I drove the car home (600 miles). It was getting a little warm and I didn't know the car very well. I sure did after the trip. It went flawless!!

After about 1 hour from Carlisle, I noticed the temp going up a bit. I released the hood to let as much hot air out from the engine compartment and drove it that way all the way home. The temp went down to normal.

I learned that when I owned a big block mid year and had to keep the temp down for semi long trips.

The hood never twitched and I didn't smell any fumes.

Hope this helps.

DLG, what part of florida are you in? i have a stock 74 hood, with the fresh air flap that works. all you'd need is a 74 air cleaner and gasket. then poof fresh air.
i'll make you a deal.
