why do some C1 emblems have silver and other have gold?

for the C1 I have seen the replacement front and rear emblems with gold or silver. What is the story on why some cars would have one color and others would have the other?

All 58-60 front & rear and 61 rear emblems had gold letters with a silver backing plate. In 62 the rear emblem was changed to silver letters with a black backing plate. All service replacements had silver letters. It is said that the original gold letters would deteriorate to a silver color due to moisture and heat.

Yes they do fade. Mine have been in a box since they were 12 years old so they are still gold but not as bright as new ones would have been.
