Wierd symbol on my center gauge

The area where my inst/aver fuel numbers are on my '90...are occasionally going blank...then the word SYS flashes a couple of times in thier place..the the mpg numbers come back for a little while...then back to the SYS.any idea what this is supposed to be?

Suggest you go to search & enter "Sys flashing". I'm using a lap top which I'm not familiar with & can't figure out how to paste the info. confused:confused

great!! big help thanx...was surprised this was such a common problem.I do have an aftermarket stereo that was in the car when I bought it..it started to not work for time to time..and finally stopped working all together..so this may be a cure.

great!! big help thanx...was surprised this was such a common problem.I do have an aftermarket stereo that was in the car when I bought it..it started to not work for time to time..and finally stopped working all together..so this may be a cure.

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new (aftermarket) stereo, he will need to do the following:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Picked this up a while back. I think it may relate to your problem.

My 96 LT1 started doing that, and when the battery finally died and replaced it it went away never to be seen again.

With my previous '92 and '96 Vettes, it usually meant that the battery was on its last legs. Replacing the battery cured my 'SYS" messages. It could mean a different electrical problem however but I'd start by checking the battery.

Have you tried to pull the CCM codes?
If not, jumper A( top right) and G( bottom left) on your ALDL.
Any error codes will show in the speedo readout.

I had the same problem. I did it with no problems. I have a 94 and an FSM and if you need help let me know. It is an easy fix but time consuming. I have the GM wiring diagram for that fix if you didn't already find it. PM me and I will help all I can.
