1985 C4
I took my daughters 1985 C4 out for a short trip today. I was on a cement highway with a bump on every road seam. The car handled so bad it was horrible. Every bump made the rear end bounce to the left. It felt out of control at times. It rode nice on smooth country roads. Any suggestion? thanks...Jim

That in itself could be any number of things, such as over-inflated tires (factory issue tires usually ride best around 32-33# but you can experiment a little. Take a look at what the door sticker tells you about the manufacturer's recommendations for the correct air pressure. It's usually ok to deviate slightly to improve your ride one way or the other.

Now that statement tells me that some serious suspension work is needed. Have a Corvette professional look the car over, and under if you'll pardon the pun. ;)

As long as there is not a flat tire, the car should never handle "horribly" as you say. The car, especially a 1984 model year, is known for its harsh ride, and even more so if it is equipped wiyth the Z-51 option package. They toned the suspension down in later years.

Another thing to mention, or rather one I should ask, is whether or not the top was in place or removed. With the cantilever top (Porsche owns the name "Targa" so GM isn't allowed to use it ;)) removed the body has a tremendous amount of "cowl shake", especially over rough roads or railroads tracks. My first experience I thought something was wrong with my car! :eek

There are remedies for that. Just ask and we'll discuss those posibilities.

You'll hear from a lot more people soon. :CAC

Check out our Portal to see if we have a listing of Corvette mechanics, excuse me technicians in your area.

not sure

a buddy of mine had a wheel bearing (i think it was) that was completly shot on the driver side. caused his car to jerk, or stick at the rear, and at times also seemed out of control. But it noticable, had a rough kind of squeeling sound
