I have a 97 c5 auto coupe with 176,000 miles (bought to drive!!)
my trans is going(1st major problem) keeps pulling a 1870 code
(internal slip)....I have found A trans from A 2000 model w/9000
miles cheap will they interchange ??? chevy parts dept shows two different part numbers for the transmisions I called GM tech dept they said ?? haven't called GMSPO yet but will try them on monday thanks in advance for any help 321 :)

HI there,
A few things should be considered before using this used 00 trans.
First, you dont know what you are buying, or if its functioning correctly.
Second, due to consistant quality control improvements, there are many changes between the 97, and the 00. Will it work??? Yes, but it may NOT give the same feedback and drivability that the 97 did. Do you have a mechanic whom can reset the TAPS shift settings in the PCM?>??? The tables MUST be reset for a changed transmission, or an overhauled transmission.
Also, is your transmission blown up or just setting this code??????
If it is only setting the code, and you do NOT feel any difference in performance, except for a harsh shift, you may just need to change the valve body in the unit.
You see, when an 1870 is set, the PCM will give maximum pressure, to assure that no components are damaged, until the cause is repaired. This will give you a harsh shift, however, will NOT harm the trans and is NOT an indication that the transmission is NO good.
I would have the transmission checked, looking at pan debris, and splitting open the filter, to check for debris.
It is possible that the transmission is damaged, but my guess here is that a valve body will do the job.

c4c5 you sound like one tech lit cat ...
i took the 97 to the dealer, tech told me that it did have a internal slip and because of the high miles best to replace trans p.s. i worked for this chevy dealership for 5 years and feel strongly this tech told me the truth to the best of his ability, but that being said
the trans in my car now does go into the high presure mode
(hard shifts ) we have flushed it filtered it, no help i have noticed that when it does this the trans fluid is over 208 degrees ??
now the 2000 model trans is cheap 400 W/converter 9000 miles
verfied by me with warranty ( to be a good trans)
what would you do ?
thanks
P.S. I now own a tattoo shop in Stephenville Texas

if you ever get this way we would love to hook you up

Valve body, for sure.

HI there,
Well, your temp at 208 when this code sets confirm your valvebody issue.
I would honestly do the valve body first, as if there were not any real debris in the trans pan, then I can virtually guarantee that your valve body is causing this issue.
It only takes 2 hours to change, and the updated valvebody will repair your condition.
Thank you for your offer, maybe when the c6 emblem is released.

c4c5 what do you think about me buying the used trans pulling its V.B. to risky ? the spare trans couldnt be a bad thing ?
on a car w/this high of miles(wow I just referred to my vette as a car, cough! cough!)
never had this kind of issue, been in car business too long and always traded out at any signs of a problem or boredom !
but vowed from day one next owner of this vette would be allstate! and have loved every mile and just for the record this car has never been over 160 mph
LOL ...321 :)
P.S. all yall out there worried about 60k and 70k miles on your C5
this car has 176,000 miles regularly sees triple digits does not smoke still gets 23.5 mpg. still turns heads and this little trans thing is the 1st major prob. and very few minor probs. and this was the first year C5 and a early 97 at that.
noy too bad from them boys in kentucky!!

Hi there,
You could try the valvebody out of the 00, as it would have the updated spool valves, and the like.
Just make sure that the body is cleaned out correctly, and the solenoids clean.
You should do just fine, as with that course of action, there would not be a need to reset your ADAPTS for your transmission.

Just make sure to use a new valvebody spacer plate.

your the best c4c5
