My 1976 L-48 will not idle down. For a while you could rev it up by pressing down on the accelerater and letting up real fast then it would idle down to about the 800 RPMs but now, since I have cleaned the linkage at the carb I can't get the engine below about 1200 RPM unless it is in gear. Any suggestions?

Try this. After the car has run for about 10-15 min, remove the air cleaner. With one finger, open the choke plate and with the other hand snap open and release the throttle. Then remove your finger from the choke. The idle should come down to pre linkage cleaning event level. If this works, then you have a problem with the choke adjustment or the choke not heating up.

Thanks

OK, I will try it, thanks for the info.

Yes I have checked all the springs and every thing looks good. If its not the choke could it be the throttle cable?

Well it sounds as though something is sticking. You could try checking the accelerator cable by pushing the gas pedal and seeing if it comes all the way back.

My guess though is something like throttle bushings (tried WD40?), or the choke, or the fast idle setting.

The 76 is carbureted, isn't it?
