Question: Will opening up an exhaust cause power loss?

Cut outs are junk, and a waste of MY time. I have manual cut outs on my 76 Vette, I disconnect them to impress my friends in my driveway and I would never drive with them like that!

Impressing friends with exhaust? Do you have a big wing to go with that? :ugh



Some people are waxers and some like to go fast. It's not always about the sound or looks. IMO

It is my daily driver to school and I want to make it quiet when I need it quiet.I dont race, but I want to keep the same performance or make it a little better. An exhaust system is going to cost at least $800 if I get a good one while cutouts cost $300. I was just asking for suggestions bc for a college student $300 is a lot and might be next weeks gas money!:cool

Hey dogdish, I got chambered muffler eliminators and they sound great. Especially if I get on it. The best part is that I fly through state inspection with no problems or questions.

Thats why I was thinking cutouts! It would have a similar sound to chambered muffler eliminators, but I could make the car stock sounding with a flick of a switch! Plus you are lucky, by me they are supper strict about any exhaust modifications. People cry when they hear the sweet sound of a V8 going thru monmouth country!:cool
I guess it is for a good reason. Otherwize we would have way too many ricers and their fart cans!:L

Before I got my vette, a few years back, I had a '91 Trans Am, TPI, with headers and a 3" catback. I put on an electric cut-out, a McCord Powerplate 2 and wired it into the ashtray area in the console. Completely stealth. It lasted 3 years and it worked great. But to tell you the truth, on a vette (unless you go to the track), I think the sound on an L98 would sound only like a car with no muffler, and we all know what that sounds like. That's why I opted for the chambered eliminators. Civilized when idling and cruising, but sounds pretty darn good when you open it up. Plus, for the price of quality electric cut-outs, and you definitely want to weld them in not clamp, you can get a quality set of eliminators and for a few bucks more, go for a Magnaflow or Flowmaster catback.

Hey Nicky G: Any chance you can post sound clips of your exhaust? I live in Middlesex County, NJ, close to you, and would love to hear the exhaust. I am planning on putting in the DMH exhaust cutouts, but have a few weeks to finalize my decision...appreciate the help...

Not really...I agree...any of those greenwood body kits (no doubt to what he was refering based on his anti-wing stance) are BF UGLY. Mechanical mods good..parts to make your vette look like a trans am...BAD!

He said he was "anti Greenwood". John Greenwood did more for Corvette racing and respectibility around the world than that guy could ever hope to do. That's why I called him on it. He then modified his post. I suggest you re-read the previous posts, and then tell me my response was wrong.

So if I am obviously talking about spoilers/wings, and commenting (indirectly) about how ugly as sin they are on Corvettes (C5-R exception), how in the world would you all the sudden assume I am diminishing the character of another human being. That is the most atrocious thing I have ever heard.

Think about it…

If someone were to say I don’t like the Lingenfelter Corvettes, does that translate into them saying, “I am anti-John Lingenfelter,” No It certainly doesn’t. It just means they are anti-something-to-do-with-his-products.

Your rebuttal is BS, and you knew I was talking about the ugly as sin Greenwood packages and not the character of these human beings.

Your argument makes no sense. To mirror your original statement, you would have to leave off the Corvette modifier in your first Lingenfelter statement. Different meaning entirely. (Hopefully you're not an English major.)

Depends on lots of stuff.

As exhaust gas cools, it gets heavier, and more dense, and harder to push.

With cutouts, less gases are pushing to the tailpipe tips, and there's even further cooling, and more resistance from THAT exit.

If the cutouts are tuned for this, no problem.
