will these rims fit?

I have a guy at work that has a 1997 camaro z28. I am thinking about buying his extra set of rims but am unsure if they will fit my car (1987 vette). He states that they match up perferctly. Is there any way to tell besides the obvious of putting them on? They are vault ss rims. 17's.

If you can find out the backspacing and bolt pattern on the new rims, that would be helpful.

Bolt pattern's the same, backspacing is different... 85-87 models use different spaced wheels than 88-96. To use 88-up wheels, wheel spacers are required.

Seems to me, the last time I checked they were somewhere around $200/pr. There are a few vendors that have em. I think, Rippie and maybe Vette Brakes have them. They can be found used, but rarely

I found a pair of new adapters on Ebay that where one inch wide and hub / lug centric. Very well machined for $69. a pair with lug nuts.

$200 is not bad for new. And I would love to find a used pair for $69. But I might wait on the rims right now. they are a good deal for $700 but they come with drag radials which I won't need, meaning I have to purchase a whole set of 17' tires. I am now thinking of having my rims restored. Anyone ever had this done? The place I was talking to wants $150 per rim.

I may be wrong on this, but I am pretty sure the stock wheels on a '97 Z28 are 16 inches. With that said, I think the stock 16 inchers fit right up to the early C4's, so the aftermarket 17's should too.

If he really wants to sell 'em to ya, why don't you just bolt one on? It shouldn't take more than a half hour to do, and you can see if they fit or not in living color

$150 a rim is a competitive price for restoration. I have a buddy up here in Chicago that just opened an Auto Spa that provides wheel restoration. He said cost is aboutr $100, so take it from there.

inyo, is it worth it? I mean is the quality there that makes the rim look practically new? The salesman showed me a rim that was restored and one that was original that were both from the same original car and they looked amazing. But, he was a salesman, which we know aren't always truthful.

On a side note, you can get AFS wheel / Tire package for $100, or even less, off of ebay. that includes mounting, balancing, and they are made to fit your car.

I hear ya... Stuff gets expensive quick.

If it were me, I would swap the wheels for different ones. keep the originals for the future if you ever want them

You will probably be pretty happy with the 17 inch swap as the car will handle much more crisp with them. If you can't afford tires yet, just get the wheels and buy tires when you have more money; you can get Kumhos for about 110 a tire from tirerack

I was thinking of new rims for my 86 which has stock 16' wheels. With the 17" wheels, how badly does that affect the speedometer?

I have to disagree on that. I have an 87 vette and a 97 Camaro with the 5 spokes on her. I tried swapping them before only to realize that the offsets are different. The offsets are the same for an 88 and up Vette as for 93 and up Camaro. The offset is about 38mm in the 84-87 Vettes, while it changes to about 56mm in the 88 plus models. Regardless of the wheel size his aftermarket rims (if they sit properly on his camaro) are in the 56mm offset while your 87, like mine, is in the 38mm offset. Basically they will sit too far in:ugh Wheel adapters from Vette B&P are a good choice or if you can find them used that would be nice. You can get new AFS ZR1 style wheels for about $475 on ebay new by the way

Well I inspected the rims and they look good. I am still wondering about the offset. One of the guys at a local shop said they would bolt right up. If i have them put them on the car, will i be able to notice if the offset is off? I guess I mean will the naked eye be able to pick it up?

assuming I have my math going the right way, if they are the wrong offset, they will sit 'in' the wheel well significantly. The easiest way to tell is to measure the tire on the front, with the hood up. measure from the well to the inside edge of the tire, and then try to measure the outside too. You should notice really quick if they are wrong anyway, but measuring won't hurt
