Just bought an '81..Car has had the windows tinted, probably in '82 from the looks of it : )

Anyone got any tips or hints to get the junk off of the windows?

Thanks for your help.

Prob. a do-it-yourself job? I would take it to a window tinting place and have them recommend how to get it off without scratching the glass. If you want to replace it they will remove the old and put on the new. I would recommend a light tint if you do replace it because of the cops. I use to roll down both windows when ever a cop was near by.

When I bought my 76 it had "redneck tint" on all the windows.. (you know the purple stuff you buy at walmart) First I tried to use a window scraper and that didn't work at all. Then a ricer friend of mine recommended "gila window tint remover" It is just a spray you can buy at an auto-zone or wal-mart. It work unbelievably, just spray it on and 15-20 minutes later it is just mush. Believe it or not it didn't even take off the defroster material on the rear window.

I also recommend the Gila remover, works like a charm, just slowly.

I used a razor stipper in addition to the remover to get the mirror'd tint of mine, as I assume the tint had been on there at least 9 or 10 years it had faded and was just nasty to look at, blotchy mirrors. It took 3 applications to fully remove it all.

I know of one my buddies who took some sleazy tint off of his old 280ZX with a cheap home remedy. Go buy ammonia from your local cleaning department, spray it all over the window in a fine mist, and then apply a trash over the mist. The bag should stick. This works best in the sunlight, as the heat speeds the reaction. It may not be the best way, but it's economical and seems to work. Good luck, it'll suck no matter how you slice it doing it yourself....

As long as you are in Florida, don't sweat the darkness of the tint. Just about anything goes here. Take it to a pro...window tinting in Florida is the cheapest in the U.S. Had mine done with top-of-the-line 3M tinting and the cost was $38.00 rear and side windows.

man that is cheap mine will be about 100-130 for the back and sides

That's the difference between a '77 and a '78 rear window
