Windshield replacement - do yourself or pay someone

My front windshield is really pitted (original, soft ray).

I'd like to replace it while I have the interior pulled apart.

I'm tempted to do it myself to save money, since it looks fairly easy ;-)
(That's the way all my projects start: "Honey it looks really easy. I'll have it back together in no time...")

It appears to be held in by a rubber ring all the way around instead of held in by some type of sealer.

Am I mislead in my expected ease of installation?

What is your past experience in this area? If you've had it done professionally, what price am I looking at, ballpark?

Any recommended installers in the Texas (Dallas-Austin-San Antonio) corridor?

Thanks,
Doug

Ah yes, I remember reading that tread now, just couldn't remember what forum I read it on.

It sounds like a nightmare. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe paying someone for this would be the best solution.

Any takers on a recommended installer in Texas that won't destroy my trim and paint?

Doug

I know several individuals and shops "in Texas" who could help you. However, Texas is a pretty big place. Your profile doesn't say where in Texas you're located. Could you be a little more specific? My guess is that you're not willing to drive to Houston for a windshield if you're in, say, El Paso.

I live between Dallas and Austin so either city would be acceptable.

Thanks,
Doug

The closest I can come to Austin is Santa Fe, Texas. It's south of Houston. If Santa Fe is acceptable, you can call Gary Summerville at (409) 925-1098.

whatever you do, find a guy shop/guy that has done C-2 vert windshields before....... spend the time to find the right shop, and maybe ever ask for references (other C-2 guys they did work for). that window trim is very expensive to replace if they mess it up.

They came to my house, super job

HI,

I was (I sold it and have a 60 now) critical when it came to work on my 63. I had a local glass company install a very expensive date coded one in my 63. They came to my house and did it in my driveway. I looked hard to find something wrong but I could not. It never leaked, looked great. I caused myself more pain worrying about it than I should have. I did have to call around to a few glass places to get a guy I thought I could trust.

Best of luck

Andy

I installed my 66 vert's windshield and it was no big deal. You really should have someone there to help (pressing on the outside), but mine went in just like it was described in the shop manual.
